Best Legal Exhaust Setup?
I just got pulled over and in trouble for no cats. Now is the time I guess to swap the exhaust setup anyway. I need headers and such. What is the best legal setup?

What I am about to run, go with Edlebrock shorty's they are 50 state legal and have the Carb and EO #'s welded on check page 2 of my website near the top of that page for photos, then go with your stock y-pipe or get a catted y-pipe made by random tech which isn't legal but cats are in stock locations and you can pass smog at any station with it

What would be wrong with going with Shorty headers, Catalytic Converters and true duals with straight through, noise cancelling mufflers (one placed on each side of the rear tub)? You would pick both horsepower and torque due to the duals and the straight through noise cancelling mufflers. You would also get a nice sound (not too loud of you push lightly on the loud paddle around town) and it would be street legal everywhere.

Actually it's illegal everywhere, not just Cali - moving the cats from the factory location is an EPA violation. It's just they're normally more **** about it in Cali.
If he's in trouble for no cats, I would assume someone is gonna be inspecting his new exhaust.
I like my setup, JBA shorties and a stainless Magnaflow catted-y and catback. I'm leaving a good amount of power on the table without longtubes, but I can pull into just about anywhere and smog the car with no hassle and also no hassle if I ever (*knock on wood*) get pulled over.

no offense but do you have exhaust manifolds of any type besides stock?

Shorty headers are the way to go, especially in Cali. Sad but true
. Pacesetters also makes C.A.R.B. approved shorty headers aswell. Got mine through Jet-Hot and paid under $400.00. I want long tubes but I just do not want the hassle from the smog police.
As far as I know all the states in the union require you to keep your cats. Federal laws overides state laws. I think that the location of the cats varies from state to state.

Everyone will give you their dream exhaust. You just gotta research all the stuff out there. Here would be my favorite LEGAL(just meaning with cats) set-up.
kooks 1 7/8"s headers with AIR fittings
OR
those badass new American Racing 1 7/8"s headers with merge collectors
they are both stainless steel ( https://ls1tech.com/forums/sponsor-sales-specials/595272-american-racing-f-body-gto-headers.html )
then the newer metallic core cats, they keep the car louder than regular cats
then a custom made 3" H-pipe that goes under/over the rear axle with CCE 18" powerpack mufflers

The best legal setup would have to be shorties with true duals, but I don't know how legal that is since it seems to vary state to state. I used to run JBA shorties into Magnaflow highflow cats, into a Bassani true dual exhaust. It wasn't too shabby since with all the boltons I dynoed 344 rwhp 350 rwtq. In theory this would have to be the best "legal" setup you can run.
