Stock temp gauge? Check the wiring/connector/ECT sensor.

Your guage cluster might just be messed up, the sending unit is on the front driver side corner of the driver side head, right next to the exhaust flange. It's brass, screwed in, with a few wires coming out of it. Make sure it's not messed up and dangling, this would not be good.

You car uses the engine coolant temperature to determine MANY parameters governing how the car runs. If the guage is messed up in the car and not reading, that's not that big of a deal, but if the car doesn't know what temperature it's running at, it's a huge deal. Try having the car scanned through the OBDII port and see if it's registering a temperature. If not, you may just need a new guage cluster.

start by checking the sending unit, cheapest first. if the ecu doesnt think the car is warmed up then it will be staying open loop...correct me if i am wrong.

A quick way to check to see if the ECT sensor (sending unit) is working is if your skip shift light comes on. The skip shift does not work until the car is warmed up to 170 F. So if your skip shift is working it might be a good indication that the ECT sensor is working. But to be 100% sure I would run by a GM dealership and ask them to connect the Tech 2 (scan tool) to your car and see if the ECT is giving a reading.

Is the car a '98? Thinking they have a 3 wire ECT vs. 2 on the '99 and up - one of them is for the gauge only, and why the '98 gauge actually works?
