Default Which Band Clamps?

ok i have the pacesetter LT and ORY, as you know they are slip fit. which band clamps to get? theres butt joint, lap joint, and i i see the flat ones at napa (dont know if those are the same as butt joint?). so am i supposed to get lap joint to compensate for the slip fit of the pacesetters, or are lap joints for connecting say 3" to 2.5" ?? if thats the case, and i need butt joint, is that any different then the flat ones i would purchase from napa becuase the ones at napa just look like a sheet of metal i roll around the exuast, as the butt joints / band clamps (summit, jegs, etc) are all preformed. is there a difference. i know you guys may say search the threads, and yes people have asked before, but no one really answered, its usually a band clamp vs. u clamp thread. thanks for you help, dont want to order the wrong ones and be stuck with a leaky exhuast after hours of installing headers.

Yeah, I agree..they are the best.....a little big like u said also...I wrapped my header to y pipe with Alcan tin foil wrapped around the seam 3-4 times...and this trick seems to work fine.

the napas where i live in southern cali, only have the flat band clamps, other autopart stores dont even carry any band clamps. so, stay away from "lap" style? get the "butt" joints? see, this is why i made the thread, becuase the other threads go away from the answer. lets keep the suggestions and opinions coming till we can finally get a clear answer for the slip fits.. thanks again guys

For a slip fit you need a lap joint like this one......these are what I used for all my connections

Those work very good.

V-bands are the best, but they are expensive and you'll need to weld stuff on.

Get the Accuseal band clamps. They are available through Stainless Works.

I have these on my car, and they are as good as the OEM clamp.

Summit sells dynomax stainless band clamps that are extremely high quality and are only $8.95 a peice. I've used them on all my exhaust projects and they work great. Their designed for butt joints but will easily stretch around a slip fit joint.

I have those now and they are pricey. But the other problem is if you bottom out on one its all over and you have to buy new ones. I'm looking at another solution that has more clearance such as the ones shown above.

i guess im just worried about whether the butt joint/flat style will allow leaks much easier since it is basically tight on the thicker end of the slip fit, and then barely touching the smaller section of the slip fit, therefore not being a good clamp for the exhaust.

I've heard of some using exhaust tape to combat the problem above^^

But I have not used the tape so I can't comment on how well that works..

The lap joint ones like I posted above worked great and I had absolutely no leaks from them. One thing I did do was take a round file and went around all the ends of the collector, Y pipe, etc and file off any burrs that were there so I was sure they would slide on and not have any gaps from burrs or rough edges.

Here is another option:

http://www.wolferacecraft.com/detail.aspx?ID=831

These use the v-band. They are pricey, but if getting a leak free connection is the highest priority those should work well (because this particular one uses an o-ring).

If your having clearance issues, I wouldn't use a v-band connection.

As stated above, Summit Racing sells both styles. You just have to search for them.

I believe the lap joint part number is WLK-33272 for the 3". Just make sure you order the right sizes. IIRC, the connection at the Y-to-I pipe is 2.75" - not 3" (unless you have something special). A quick check with a measuring tape can save you some possible trouble.
