Default 390 rwhp for bolton/cam cars with stock heads? How many of them?

Am I off my rocker or is 390 rwhp the going thing for a stock cubed LS1 with all the bolt ons and a cam (stock heads)?

I need to know if I am off my rocker because I just told several people that I would shoot for the 360 range with those mods.

Set me straight! <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

Eric, you are going to need all the bolt ons to have a real good chance of hitting 390rwhp. By this, I mean an ASP pulley, ported TB, no cats, some sort of tuning, etc. A lower numerical gear ratio in the stock rearend helps as well.

It also depends on what cam you use. I don't see a Comp 212/218 hitting 390rwhp w/ stock heads. The T1/B1/C1, TR 224, etc all would be a great choice.

See sig for mine. This was through a Moser 12-bolt and 4:30s.

I hit 398rwhp with the TR 224 cam and stock heads. Also had the stock rear/gears.

I hit 365rwhp and 350rwtq with a comp cam...stock programming...

I think if I had more free mods I would of hit 385 with no problem...

Yes, your car is the reason I ask. I was talking to several people on another ubb and I told them 360 was a good number to shoot for within price reality. What I mean by price reality is that basically headers, no cats, cam and intake will net you in the 360 range (give or take depending on how far they go).

I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something and telling wrong information. <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

Congrats on such a strong car and thanks for answering me so promptly. I appreciate it.

in the sig. If I would have done this LG Y-pipe prior, I would have made over 400, WITH A HOTCAM AND STOCK HEADS. <img src="gr_eek2.gif" border="0">

Hey guys Im confussed ? How does the rear gear affect your horsepower ? I see that it is probably rare for a bolt on car without heads to breach the 400 rwhp mark , But like wizkid said , 360 rwhp would be sweet and anything over that would be awsome !!!

I was the first to break 400 rwhp with stock heads (grots/B1/LS6 intake). I hit 402/378 on Fastech's dyno.

I'm at 380RWHP thru a HP sucking 9" rear <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

No dyno tricks here either <img src="graemlins/gr_chug.gif" border="0" alt="[chug]" />

here is my last dyno with the B1 cam. I was trying different things, only look at the highest one haha

I should be close to 390 rwhp...I dyno'd 360 before the ASP pulley, Ported TB, and LS6 intake.

I'm shooting for 390 with my hotcam.

Last dyno was 371/377 with the addition of a ported TB

I just added the LS6 intake and I plan on gettng dual exhaust and LS1edit.

390rwhp and 11.99999 sec timeslip w/ my Hotcam is the goal. And I'm going to do it in front of the Houston Hotcam Haters <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

[quote]Originally posted by Billy C:

Any time the dyno is measuring the power at the wheels (as opposed to an engine dyno where the motor is out of the car), there are many drivetrain factors that come into play. A larger (lower-number) rear gear will make the wheels spin more with the same change in RPM, which fools the dyno into believing that more power is being made. At least, I think that's the physics behind it. The smaller the gear (higher number), the more loss you see on the dyno. I am told that the average is 5-15 rwhp loss by switching from 3.42s to 4.10s. So put some 2.73s in there and see some gains. This is also what Fireball was referring to as a "dyno trick", since you're changing the reading without actually changing the real HP that's being produced. <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

BTW, screw all you guys making as much or more power than me with less mods! <img src="graemlins/gr_guns.gif" border="0" alt="[guns]" /> Goes to show why it sucks when you don't know enough to tweak your car yourself <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">

I need to find the dyno's some of you are using. They must be way higher on readings than my local dyno. I have every bolt on imaginable but a cam.Totally internal stock. I am running a 4l60 and a 4.10 12 bolt, so that hurts me a tad. But, I only dyno at 331 rwhp and 380 tq, yet my best et is 11.44 @ 119.56 which is lower than 90 percent of the bolt-on/cam cars and my mph is as high as most also. I just dont see a cam from where I am now giving me that much hp. I would like to see comparisons on the same dyno. My local dyno may be low?? I've never cared about dyno #'s other than air/fuel readings and as a tuning tool. No flames but my .02

I have seen quite a few cars put down @390 at the rear wheels with stock heads. If you put the graph up for a 390HP cam only car, and then overlay a graph from a heads and cam car that makes @390, the peak HP will be the only thing they have in common. Peak #'s don't mean dippity doo, It's all about area UNDER the curve. Now ask this question. "how many people that had @390 RWHP with cam only, have added heads and gained more than 30RWHP?". The average gain for this change is usually double that figure.

I made 381rwhp with the LS1 intake, B1, and all the bolt ons. 385rwhp after a LS6 intake was added. That was through a Moser 12 bolt with 4.10's.

I'd say expect at least mid 370's at least with all the bolt ons and a T1/B1/C1/TR224 or equal spec cam.

Dyno 101...
The "Dyno Jet" dyno, actually measures MPH over a given time. The Tach lead is only there to convert to RPM graph. The most efficient drive train would there for be a 1 to 1. Just think of your rear end as a different gear in your tranny. The more mechanical advantage..the more friction there is to turn it. The rear numbers going down is a result. We all know average hp (higher rpm torque, what ever different people call it) accelerates you, and that's what your shooting for when you gear to your power band <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0">

My 12 bolt lost 11 rwhp when going from a 10 bolt with the same gear ratio. So, since I did not "Gear Up" I just flat lost the hp due to added friction of turning the extra weight. <img src="gr_sad.gif" border="0">
