Default K&N FIPK vs Volant Indution?

Has anyone compared the two in HP and quality?

This was my post over at LS1.com:

"Volant, FIPK, FTRA induction thoughts...
OK, got a theory on the FIPK, FTRA and the Volant set up's. From restoring old muscle cars all these years, I've worked on a lot of the ram-air set up's, ranging from my 71 Mach 1 & my Boss 302 to a few Mopar & Chevy set up's. One thing that they all had in common was that when the gas was punched, engine vacuum would open up a flap (or flaps depending on the model), which was sealed to the hood in a box, and air would be sucked into the air cleaner box, thus into the carb. The shot of air was obviously cold, since those were actually "functional" ram-air systems. Now using that knowledge from late 60's muscle cars to the set-up for the Trans Am today, I would think that the Volant system would be a better fit for the WS-6 models because the box is sealed to the inside of the hood, thus creating what they used 30+ years ago....a real closed box ram-air set up. If you also used the BG Ram-Air mod, this would make the system that much better; a straight, unimpeded shot of cold air right to the air cleaners. Now thinking the same way, the FIPK or the FTRA kit would benefit the non ram-air models because their designed to get the air from different areas of the engine compartment, not from just the ram-air. So my train of thought would be that a Volant system or a Direct-Flo, Whisper, etc. kind of lid would work better for the WS-6, and the FIPK & FTRA would work better on the non ram-air models.
When we put the old ram air cars on a dyno, there was slight gains from the ram-air than from using a closed intake system, this being because air wasn't being forced into the ram-air system. Where we alway's did notice a difference was at the strip, where the ram-air cars were quicker on the time slips.
Just my .02 cents worth (maybe a $1.40 worth after the length of this). I've read a ton of post on these set up's and just wanted to offer a different train of thought. Let me know what you guys think."

A guy responded with this over there on the thread:

"OK... according to the manufacturers...

FIPK produces 10 RWHP over a stock f-body LS1
Volant produces 17 RWHP over a stock f-body LS1"

So, IMHO, if you have a WS-6 Trans Am get the Volant & combine it with the BG/Ram Air mod for a true Ram Air effect. If you don't have a WS-6, get the FIPK. No I did read somewhere that the Volant doesn't fit well on the Firehawks. Hope this helps.

Thank you, You made very good points.

How do you think it would be with the SS hood?

I've heard 19 to 22 HP from the FIPK though.

drew778 I would have to say that I would think the FIPK or FTRA would be a better choice for the SS Camaro, just because of the difference of the hood styles & factory systems between the SS & the WS6 Trans Am. I haven't seen any dyno numbers or time slips of the FIPK or Volant systems, but just using some practical thinking I really think that's what kind of set ups you should use for the type of car you have. Also, I've seen better numbers posted for the FIPK kit also.

WeatherGuy Thanks! <img src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Capt. Slapshot, Thanks for all your help.

I'm going with the FIPK, I'll post some track times once I get it.

I'd go with the Volant over the <img border="0" alt="[guns]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_guns.gif" /> K&N FIPK, I gained 15hp but nothing in the 1/4.

A lid would be the best way to go.
