Default Just finished ASP install-120 degrees is over 250lbs!

When I torqued the new bolt to 37 lbs and then an additional 120 degrees I used my torque wrench to check the how many lbs. At 90 degrees or so my 250 wrench has already clicked. I'm guessing around 275 lbs torque at 120. I'm a pretty big guys and that is cranking down on it. That seems like more than what is needed. What do you guys think?

As long as it's tight <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Tight is ok. I am a fairly decent size myself, and I stick my legs up on the wheel and pull with my back. Tighter than a 90 yr old nun on my car <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

And you actually are supposto go to 140 degrees if memory serves me correctly <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Did you sink the pulley down first with the old bolt? We se large numbers like this if the pulley isn't first sunk down with the old bolt.

You need to put the old bolt in and torque to 240 ft-lbs. Pull it out and put in the new bolt. Torque to 37ft-lbs then 140 degrees.

Quite a few people don't do this - we have pulled off tons of loose crank pulleys - the problems start when they get so bad they kill the first cam bearing!

Chris: I dont have the stock degrees in front of me, but the instructions from MTI for my ASP pulley say 120 degrees.

It's tight enough that you should be fine, but I am 99% sure what I outlined above is GM factory procedure. I will check later on today, unless someone else has a helms handy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I used the old bolt and torqued it to 240 ft lbs first. Then I used the new bolt and did the 37 then 120 per the install instructions. I've heard 120 and 140. 120 degrees is around 275 ft lbs of torque, so I'd be alittle nervous to keep pulling on it. 140 would be over 300 ft lbs <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> .

Damian,
Used the same method. Feet on wheel, pull like hell. Other half came out in the garage and was like What the hell are you doing <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> .

You're right Chris, gm says 140 degrees.

I wonder why MTI's instructions that came with my underdrive pulley are different. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Thanks for the info Chris! Per GM specs, I re-tightened the bolt to my best quess of 140 degrees. It is more than the 120 I had marked. A breaker bar is a priceless tool <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> .
