Default Ferrari vs LS1 sound

I love my LS1 with the cut outs open and the cam deep rumbel choppy idel sound. I was just driving down Rt 32 behind a new yellow Farrari and man does that thing sound bad ***. The motor in that thing sounds like it would rev up to 12000 rpm in no time. Why do those motors sound so different. I would of liked to race him if i was in my Camaro. I hope he would have one but i would have been right on his tail.

Im not sure if this is right, but doesnt it have to do with the degrees of the valves. We are 90 I think, and some other engines are different like Ferrari. It probably has to do with the valves/cylinder size and the way the air leaves the engine. I love the sounds of Ferraris also. I would love to have on some day. There is just something about that sound that gives me the chills.

Ferrari also uses a a flat crank, I think that makes the biggest difference in sound.

The difference in pitch is mostly due to RPM's.

He has a very short stroke allowing for high RPM's and a higher pitched sound.

Actually the other day When I was riding my bike I saw two other crouch rockets race each other and I'll tell you what they sounded like an F430, going full throttle next to each other. It was almost a 8 cylinder right? two 4 cylinder going side by side lol.

The bore and stroke isn't that small though the bores range from 3.5 to 3.62 and the stroke on all of them is around 3.00 that’s both the V8 and the V12’s. My mach 1 only has a bore of 3.55 and a little longer stroke of 3.54 but even at its redline of 7,000 doesn't sound a thing like a Ferrari V8, neither does a Lincoln LS and that V8 is even smaller 3.39 X 3.35 and revs up to 7grand or so.

Essentially, the Italian V8s are like 2 I4s joined together, where the US V8s are like two V4s joined together. If you look at a I4, its rod journals are 180 degrees separated (flat plane). On a V engine they are 90 degrees separated. Thats why they sound different. Cylinder bank angle has some effect I'm sure, but not much. Besides many import V8s are 90 degrees as well.

360 modena's run a 3.6 liter V8, F355's had a 3.5 liter V8

almost all ferraris have v8s, there arent many that have the 12 cyl.

also firing order would be another thing that will change the sound

the flat crank is the main reason, but the F430's aslo use 180degree headders, and can do so beacuse it is a mid engine car, combine with a 9000rpm redline and a flat crank and Viola Ferrari sound.

Thats not true .. There are many V8 Ferrari models going back to the beggining when Enzo himself designed them to current models.

Im sure there are many reasons why they sound different, including the above said reasons.

Aren't Ferraris DOHC??? OHV vs S/DOHC makes a sound difference. Example: Ford's 2V SOHC 4.6L V8 sounds different than our OHV 5.7l V8. That might make a difference too. More rotational mass in OHC motors, higher revvinng, all adds to differences in sound.

Smaller displacement motors also tend to be more "high-pitched" in sound. example: Ferrari (3.6L) vs Chevy (5.7) V8's. This is phenomenon also contributes to why fart cans sound so disgusting on 1.6L Honda Civics .

These arent the most technical explanations, but they seem like "common sense" reasons to me.

This is purely my opinion and pretty much useless but Ferraris have a lower pitched sound than most exotics (sounds crappy IMHO, I've heard MANY from the cheapies to an Enzo in person and never liked the sound). Lambo Murcielagos and Carrera GT's on the other hand... now THAT sounds sexay. I like the sound of a nice american V8 too though... but dam. When that GT goes from 700rpm to 8,000 in just under a second... DAM.

Personally I think Porsche's sound the worst out of all the exotics. Except the Carrera GT, that one is at the top of the list.

Maybe you could ask this guy how to get the ferrari sound out of an engine
