Default Porting your own TB

What would it require to do this? Just some different grit sandpapers and polishing compound?

Thanks folks

I used a dremel tool with a cutting bit, a drill with a grinding stone, and then used a dremel with a polishing pads and sanding pads.

Yeah, I just went with a dremel with cutting bit, sanding rolls, the polished it out with some micro paper that I got from work. It's like glass!

All you need is a sanding drum with a couple very course sandpaper rolls and then a couple fine rolls. If you want to polish it then you'll need some much higher grit sandpaper which I do by hand (all the way up to about 1500 grit) then polishing with a buffing wheel and some polishing compound. I don't think there's any performance advantage from polishing...more of an appearance mod.

Wonder if porting is even worth it ... I would think at most it would give 5HP ... maybe. Think I'll just get some sandpaper and do it by hand (don't have a sanding tool/dremel). Might take over an hour, but I'll have a lot of time on my hands tomorrow, lol.

Yea, that's an awesome offer ... but a few bucks for some serious sandpaper and getting similar results may be the way to go for me. Can't see even the best porting job getting much more than a home job. Who knows tho, I'll take my TB later today and see ... that 90* opening may help quite a bit, dunno how far the stock TB opens up

I ported mine and a few of my buddies. I usually use sanding rolls, and it takes a while with just using them. I've got a spare one laying here and might try some sort of metal bit. After using the sanding rolls, I'll take some fine grit sandpaper and smooth it out, not really polish it to a mirror finish, just to clean it up and make it a little smoother.

9ball - You will NOT be able to do it by hand unless you plan on using something like a 50 grit and spending about 10 hours but your fingers will be raw long before then. As for the bump stop mod (the 90* opening) it's a good idea and easy to do. You have to be careful with that. If you go even 1/4 of a degree past 90 then you'll trip a SES light. Best way is to read the TPS voltage and sand it down a little bit at a time to ensure you don't go past the 90*. I don't remember the exact voltage to stay under (volts rise as the throttle opens) but do a search and you'll find it.

I say let the guys who know how to port them do the work, it's worth the peace mind knowing that it's done properly. also not taking the risk orf ruining your tb & have to buy another one anyway. I used Tim from performace throttle body & he did a great job, all did was bolt it on & have had no eng. light issues & the car has better throttle response. I highly recomend him.

It is definitely worth it. Bo posted up real dyno results a while ago, and I know my butt dyno felt results as well!

Yea its definitely a very worthwile mod that has price per hp gains around $8 per rwhp. those gains are close to nitrous for those numbers. I know we have been talking in pm's and you say you have an ls2 tb. Its impossible to do by hand, i know me and Bo can both attest that even with a very aggressive metal bit, then aggressive sanding rolls on a air die grinder these tb's take us over a couple of hours. The ls2 tb is about 2 times as hard to port compared to an ls1 as well. It wont hurt to try but isnt possible, If your going to do it yourself at least pick up a dremel or die grinder, It will cost more then sending your tb out to one of us, but then you have another tool to use for other jobs.
