Anyone seen any real gains running gutted cats on a '01-'02 F-body w/stock exhaust manifolds and a aftermarket Y-pipe? Thanks. WJ.

Last fall I was running 13.0@109, this spring first time out I ran 12.4@113.8, only mods over the winter were MAFT and Gutted Cats...The MAFT only was used to compansate for my MAF ends so it is 5% rich on the base. I don't know which of those two mods made the difference but what a difference it made.

Are you still interested in the offroad pipes? Theyll make more power than gutted cats. The cat pipes are only 2 1/4" in diamter whereas the mufflex pipes are 2 1/2" diameter. Also, port matching the exhaust manifolds to the offroad pipes will add some power as well.

I gutted my cats and found no gain at the track and the only true difference was a terrible sounding exhaust note afterwards. I am adding longtube headers and y-pipe to fix this nasty exhaust sound. Sounds like crap at start up. after that the sound is really just hollow. My opinion is DON'T DO IT ! I wish i never did. Hope this helps you figure out what to do.

I picked up 7 RWHP by putting gutted cats on my car. I had the Mufflex Bypass pipes and they sound terrible. Then I picked up a set of gutted cats and put them on. They sound good in my opinion. I also have the loud mouth with the dynomax muffler in place of the resonator. What ever you do, DO NOT buy the mufflex. They cost too much and sound like A$$.

Zippy Z28: You sure that's all you did? The translator and gutting the cats? That's almost unbelievable...What are you running for a catback? WJ.

I gutted my cats a month ago and can't offer any performance numbers, but it didn't make a noticable difference. I think the exhaust note sounds alot better (deeper). It sounds more like a 10.1:1 compression engine now. It has no rasp at all. My other exhaust consists of stock manifolds, SLP y-pipe, stock intermediate pipe (2.75"), and Flo-pro muffler w/stock tailpipes. I was going to get the Hooker catback system, but I'm afraid it might make it sound bad??? So, in conclusion I like the sound of the gutted cats.

I have the stock exhaust manifolds and had my cats gutted about 3 weeks ago at a local muffler shop that will remain nameless, I had them build me 2.5in mandrel bent y-pipe into a 3in collector that continues into my Hooker Catback. I dont have a dyno, but exhaust velocity was definitley increased and HP raised about 8-10 HP. The sound is pretty loud at WOT. and it sounds deeper and louder at 2000 rpm and up, than before. Its not drony it just sounds less restrictive, I like it so far. All said and done $200.00 labor and parts absolutley Bang for the Buck Mod. Headers can wait for now.
