somthing every 98 ls1 owner should do....
I'm getting ready to put an STS kit on my car and have been "prepping" it so it's running in tip top shape before I put the kit on. I was getting 3.9* of knock retard at WOT on my '98 and stumbled across this thread about a year ago. I kept putting off the knock sensor swap until I decided I wanted to start really modifying my car. So I ordered some knock sensors from another member that came off of a new LS6 crate motor. I pulled my intake manifold today and discovered that my knock sensors were the newer style (5/98 build date).
They still looked mint but I replaced them with the sensors I bought anyway. After I button it all back up and take it for a drive I'll report back with my results...
I don't know what to do now. New knock sensors evidently weren't the solution for me! That's $70 down the drain... The Best V8 Stories One Small Block at Time

The "tune" I was running evidently had a little too much timing. With that in mind, I wouldn't recommend anyone to run the power program from a hypertech power programmer III.
HPP3's seem to be good only if you want to change your gears or shift points. So I guess my old knock sensors were good all along. Dummy me for not logging a run on a stock tune with my old knock sensors. Oh well...lesson learned I suppose. Anybody want some newer style knock sensors out of a '98?
While tuning my car (EFILive) the knock sensors had me modifying the spark tables to rediculously low numbers; down to 15* @ WOT. So, after what seemed like thousands of test runs, decided to look into the knock software from 98 on. Found that the GM software controlling the "new-style" 99 & later sensors is different from the 98 knock sensor software. So, I copied a stock file from a 2000 GM knock sensor & the knock reduction went away. I am not talking about changing the sensitivity or other tuning options, am talking specifically about only the stock knock sensor software. After copying, I even reduced two of the 2000 software settings because they differed quite a bit from the 98 software. Anyway, ended up able to run better than stock spark during WOT (mods in sig).
To recap: the 99 & later knock sensor software is different than the 98. This difference caused my knock sensor problem. I have a 98 PCM & new style knock sensors. Again, I am talking about only the "knock sensor software" oprion in the tuning file, not any of the other knock sensor tuning sensitivity options.

The important values from a 99+ knock software is the difference of 140, 120, & 150. The rest is up to what you want. The 99+ software uses 245, 210, & 245. I reduced these numbers to 225, 200, & 225. The numbers you posted are the 98 PCM knock sensor values & are were not upgraded (modified) w/ the new style sensors.
