Unhappy car idles high on initial start up.?

can anyone give me some guidiance on what might be going on with my idling problem, seems as when i leave my car sit a few days[cold]and go an start it up,it wants to shoot up to around 16-1700 rpms and then start to decline down to around 900. car is a 2002 t.a after market t.b. cam, headers.stall. mods where done a couple of years ago,but the idling issue started this spring. p.s, over the winter i had a battery tender on all winter.anything i can do or look for.? what about turning down the idle screw.?

sounds like you have a slight leak. I would check around the intake manifold

yeah, most engines do this in order to heat things up quicker. It is normal for the engine to idle on start up a bit higher than it does after it is warmed up, especially in the winter but at the same time, 1700rpms is pretty high. When I start mine up in the morning, it will stay around 1000-1100rpms for a minute or two, then drop to normal idle.

^^^+1 I was going to say the same thing, pretty much the "choke" feature when the car is cold. Every car i've owned when I first start it idle goes up to ~1500-1600 rpm.

your engine is choking itself...like you do to a lawn mower when it doesnt start on the first pull.

Why does it matter? If the idle returns to normal after warm up what is the big deal?
