Default 160 degree thermostat running really hot!!!

Just installed my thermostat from SLP. It says 160 degrees but now my motor runs hotter than the stock thermostat!!! I was running between 178 and 183 consistently and now after the install, its running at around 190-195 and it moves around! I am full on fluid, the right stuff too. Why is my $60 160 thermostat running so hot??

Please help!

No way you ran cooler then 183 on the stock t-stat they dont even start to open till 195. Not sure why you are running that hot on the slp though I just got a hypertech one and will be installing it tomorrow.

What are you measuring your temp with?

Let's put it this way... I live in Phoenix, AZ... I just installed a new Be Cool #60028 Radiator and Hypertech 160 thermostat, with water wetter, and tuned my fans for the thermostat... I run at a steady 185 sitting in hot traffic...

it actually ran at the quarter mark on the temperature gague. just over or just under. If I have the A/C on, it runs a little more steady because of the fan. I'm just concerned why my upgraded thermo is running hotter than my stock thermo

only thing I could think of is that maybe SLP sent you the wrong thermo...

but then again, the stock temp guage sucks for accuracy... I had mine hooked up to a laptop and EFI Live was reading off my temps to me... where my stock guage was basically sitting at right under 210... that's after all the mods, and while the laptop was reading a 179 in temp...

I have an Autometer water temp guage that i'm hooking up soon that should be a LOT more accurate...

I have a 01 and my temp gauge actually seems to be pretty accurate with efilive.

Burp the system, I had that issue a long time ago. Ls1 are funny that way. But what I learnd from fastech is fill the block through the water pump then fill through the radiator and turn your heater on with the car running wait till you feel heat and it stops draning. If that fails cross your part# with a 160.

Sry man I lied most likely its your stock gauge mine was pretty accurate around the 198 when I turned the fans down. Well today I installed the 160 stat and the stock gauge was still at 190 but efilive was showing 178. So with the 160 mine runs at 178 fully warmed which is about right. I set my first fan to come on at 176.

I believe only the 98's have an accurate gauge. You probably have an air lock in the cooling system.
