it does not work, it is a dummy. It works off of a resisitor. the only ones thta realyl worked are i think 94-98. I know my buddies 97 works that is for damn sure.

98 was the last year for the actual reading gauges I believe.. I've heard the later ones just take an average of what the temperature is and it sets at it instead of giving you an acurate read... just to make everyone feel nice and fuzzy about their engine when in actuality it is varying..

As for the gauge, I think GM put the idiot gauge in in 1999 to keep their customers from coming in and complaining that their cars *might* be running hot...it was more for the average buyer that doesn't know much about cars...or it could be to keep the old school guys from coming in that think a car should run at a cooler temp like their old muscle cars used to.
The signal is actually good though...if you scan the OBD-II port, you do get an accurate reading of the coolant temp...the guage just doesn't display it.
If the car is overheating, you will know it...the gauge works perfectly fine, GM just reduced the gauge's sensitivity in the normal coolant temp operating range.
