Default Free Ram Air Mod??

I've been reading the posts on the free ram air mod (most of them are old) and was just wondering if you guys still recommend this mod or if you recommend sealing the area to the hood. I've read the installuniversity directions, etc....are their claims accurate?

(Edit)

Decided to make this a poll. Not interested in the SSRA or FIPK or the FTRA...These are my two options, which one would you recommend from a performance standpoint? Thanks!

seal your hood to the airbox. the FRA is worthless. What you wanna do is de-baffle your hood and get some nice thick weather stripping and seal that airbox for the very best CAI you can get

The FRA mod is better classified as the "dirty my air filter faster" mod.

Get the FTRA system. That's the only way to go IMO. Proven horsepower gains, proven 0.1 - 0.2 reduction in ET's, it's been proven to raise the volumetric efficiency of your motor, it's made of stainless steel and will last forever and it's completely stealth: totally invisible when installed (unless you decide to stick your head under the nose of your car for some reason).

yup it will do jsut fine. sealing the hood is the best way to do it. tis also a lot cheaper than say chocos FTRA system. If you want, go search for a thread I amde called BG ram air vs SSRA and theres pcis of a few home made sealed airboxes

yea, i've looked at the FTRA and SSRA...don't want either. tainted, i read alot of your old posts regarding this and am really asking more from a performance standpoint, what you guys have seen between the FRA and sealed option. it seems like the sealed method would get the cleanest and coolest air in to me...i wish i had good enough pics to get a BGRA fab'd up!

If you have a ram air hood, it's a no brainer ... debaffle it and seal it. No worries about sucking up water from puddles, dirt, etc.

the poll is even at this point...although i'm leaning towards your advice since i have the ram air hood. did you guys remove the honeycomb inserts or leave them and just remove the baffles? the love bugs get pretty thick down here during their mating season, i can only imagine how they'd clog up a filter....

I'd leave the honeycombs in precisely for that reason ... it'll probably look better, too.

Seal to hood. Retain honeycombs as coarse filter and for appearance.

ok look at what some of you have posted.

1st. it dirties my filter faster.- cause it is getting more air.

2nd weather strip it to the hood.- yeah good idea. then at 65-80 when the hood ram air doesn't work your motor has to work harder. after a certain speed the ram air doesn't work.

It means you shouldn't let your filter get dirty because they cost approximately $50,000.00 a piece and you don't ever want to clean/replace it. Also, the quantum physics behind ram air are so complex that planet earth actually gives up at 80mph, right before the flames shoot out from your tires and you travel back in time.

Since you already have the WS6 hood, debaffle and seal it. It's much cheaper, and does not pull in the hot engine compartment air. The FRA mod allows more airflow than stock, but unless you keep moving you pull in hot air from the engine compartment which will minimize any gain. Your sealed hood pulls in cooler air whether you're stopped or moving. The best power comes from the cool air coming in from the outside of the engine compartment.

Look at the old BGRA gains http://www.geocities.com/brian98rama..._Air_Pics.html from sealing the hood (+2mph and -.2 in the quarter). These made much better power than anything else out there. They don't sell the BGRA anymore, but you can make your own. Here's what I did, using a piece of lexan from Lowes and some weatherstripping. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...42420/JGRA.jpg Cost me $25 and took about an hour to make. There are better ones out there, like the one here http://guerragroup.com/2000TA.htm , but you can make your own out of several different materials and still save $200 and get excellent results.

I wouldn't consider FTRA or SSRA while I had a SS/WS6 hood available. Without the hood, definitely. FRA I wouldn't consider either way.
