I just installed an oil cooler on my 408, because the temps were getting up to 260-270*. It was a bitch of an install but ultimately worth the effort. Temps now are running195-210*. I think there are a lot of guys whose oil is too hot but they don't realize it. Had I not put in Autometer oil and coolant temperature gauges, I would have never known I had a problem.

 

Did you just tap off of the oil galley plugs on the left side of the motor for the line going to the cooler?

 

Lingenfelter makes a manifold, $100, out of billet aluminum that bolts on to the oil pan just above the oil filter. It has a provision for an oil temp sender also. The manifold takes -10AN SS braided lines with 120* hose end couplings. It's very tight working around the header, but at least I didn't have to disconnect it.I also made up some shielding to keep the header heat away from the manifold and the braided lines.

I think the oil cooler was about 8X11", except when you get the hose ends on the whole unit is big and bulky.I nstalled it in the compartment on the drivers where the air pump used to be. A PIA, the complete headlight assembly had to be removed and I had to notch the frame rail. Also i Had to afro engineer four brackets to stabilize the cooler.Iwas pleased with the finished product , but it did take quite a bit of time.

 

What is the ideal oil temperature range? I don't see 250F as being
a problem, necessarily. I would want oil to be above 210F in normal
driving so that yesterday's water & volatiles are driven out.

 

I've got a Vette and it has a OEM digital oil temp gauge, usually it stays around 200-205*. The highest I ever got it up to was 228* and that was after really beating on the car.

My Camaro which I just put a 408 in, got as high as 270* and that's why I got concerned and decided to install an oil cooler.

Motor Trend recently had an article on a BMW series 3 twin turbo and they were concerned when the oil got to 280*. Obviously the turbos were responsible for the elevated temps.

I think a lot of guys are running around with high temps and just don't know it. I wish I knew if mine was high just because it's a high performance engine, or the headers being close to the oil filter or whatever.
