Default Help! Dont Want To Cut Header!!!

ok so the guy who owned the car before me has got to be a frickin idiot...

I'm getting ready to swap to my th350 from an m6 and need to pull my y-pipe off. well when i had gotten the car, it already had headers and ory and u bolt clamps. when i replaced the u bolt clamps with band clamps i had noticed the header was cinched down but didnt realize how much until today and not i cannot get the y pipe out due to the header being tightened down on it.

with my lack of experience, all i can come up with is cutting the headers short but i dont want to do that.

any ideas?

No idea how to pull it out, you might have to cut the y-pipe off then take out the headers to get the rest of it out and use an expansion tool on the headers? sorry I know that's not much help but it's better then cutting the headers

You're going to have to cut something. If you want to save the header - Cut the Y off just past the collector. Then take a cutoff wheel and cut through the Y, without cutting into the header, and pry it open.

This is why I put up with the leaks from the strap clamps...

you could always try hammering in a flat-head screwdriver in between the collector and the y-pipe and essentialy pry the collector out enough to remove the y-pipe.

other idea is to do the same thing but before cut the collecter down the pipe ie. parallel to the collector pipe, do this on either side then pry, this will make a clamshell type opening allowing the y-pipe to come out. then you will just need to weld these seems not too bad in my mind.

yep, just cut little slits in the pipe on either side to pry it open.
if you are going to reuse it without welding, just remember to not make the slits/cuts in the pipe longer than the width of the clamp you will be using to put it back together.
u-bolt clamps are a major PITA!

sounds like the best way imo... what side is bent in the top of it or the bottom? if its the top side it may pretty hard to do

I would just cut the collector off to the merge and have a flange welded on. It will make it easier next time you have to swap out that TH350 for a 400.

thanks guys....if i can remember correctly without getting under the car and looking, the kinks are on the top and bottom of each pipe, so i should be able to cut a slit down each side of the collector like you say.

and orangeapeel, if i can run a th350 out into the 9s without having to constantly rebuild it, i'll keep it instead of a 400. doubt that will happen though...

the torch is your friend...if you have one. whenever i run into this i just heat the cinched pipe till its glowing orange and the twist the pipe out of it with some big water pump pliers or get some gloves and twist it out. hasn't failed me yet.

i have a tool that seperates crimped exhaust pipes, however i would just cut the collector and weld a v band or a flange on it. its not worth teh hassle.
