Default Power Steering Problems?

Is there a common issue with the F-body P/S pumps failing? Every once in a while I read a post from someone saying their P/S blew up. The guy I got all my accessories from (except the P?S pump) said he went through a couple of them..

I'm doing a swap with the F-body accessories and I don't want any problems if there is something I can do about it.

Mine leaked for the longest time...nothing horrible, but a slow, constant leak. Power steering worked up until the day I replaced the pump with a piece from Turn One...

Turn One is a company that takes new, stock PS pumps and modifies them for a lower flow rate to keep the fluid temps down.

does this leak involve P/S fluid coming out from under neath the cap? for the past 6 months or so i've had a problem with vague steering and it's been driving me crazy trying to figure out what it is. the top of my P/S resevoir is always damp and where the p/s/ lines connect to the rack is stained. could the p/s pump be the problem? thanks in advance sorry to hijack

Is it enough not to install a cooler if you do not have one stock?

A stock-like cooler might be enough, but I've heard enough stories on here of them leaking and contaminating the cooling system that I have mine capped off with the Turn One pump.

As for fluid coming out of the cap, that seems to happen when the fluid gets really hot. If you want to read all about PS problems, go check out frrax.com. Those guys are hell on PS pumps, and are a good source for some fixes out there (most of which involve either the Turn One pump or Redline PS fluid, or a combo of both, which is what I did).

You can also add a cheap power steering cooler and mount it up front. The whole thing would cost less than $50 from any of the large supply houses (JEGS, SUMMIT, etc). That fluid is most definitely from overheating the stock power steering fluid. As MeentSS02 said, get some Redline PS fluid, and a cooler and you're golden.

i got a strange ps issue. I think the pump is taking a crap. When my car sits for more than 6 hours, then start it up the pump whines for a few seconds. The colder it is out, the longer it whines. Until it stops whining, my steering is really tight. So I've been starting the car, turning the wheel a few times, and it loosens up as i turn it back and for for about 20 seconds. Gradually the whining goes away as the steering loosens up. Steering has always been a bit on the tight side since I bought the car earlier this year. Time to replace the pump you think? (ps yes I checked the fluid level, and everything is fine.)

Are you sure that it is the Pump and not the Belt slipping? (had to ask)

You want to check the releif valve on the high side of the pump (port) ? could be sticking, may need a new one or reshim the spring. (or just buy a new pump).

Awesome, thanks for the help

I thought it might be a little better to check and learn instead of half assing an upgrade/repair or doing more then needed.
