Default Very confused about QTP headers

I have a stock 00 T/a and i am going to but headers from QTP.
I live in NY and we do NOT have a sniffer.
Should i get the "race style" or the "emission style"?
Our cars don't need the EGR or A.I.R. on the headers in order to work properly?
I know what the A.I.R. does, it come on until the engine is warmed up.
But what does the EGR do and how will not having it effect my car?

Unless you are going to delete the air and EGR systems off your car with block off plates and then get custom programming to prevent the check engine codes, you will need the emission style headers.

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation. Essentially it takes some of the exhaust gasses from the #2 cylinder and re-introduces it to the intake stream via the top of the intake manifold. It is used to 'help' reduce emmisions, as well as slightly better fuel mileage. But in reality, it didn't do much, as GM got rid of it from almost all of it's vehicles by 2002. I know the 01 and 02 F-bodies didn't have it, and the 97 on corvettes didn't have it either. Granted, their cams were a little bit smaller, but they didn't have an EGR setup.

How will the computer pick up on me not having the ERG and the AIR.
I know with the AIR you can just remove the pump and tubing, and no "cheak engine" light come on.

There are OBDII codes for the Air and EGR systems so they are monitored in some fashion by the computer to ensure they are operating.

The emission fittings on the headers will break, so don't bother with them.

Any tuner will get rid of the codes for you for about $75, maybe less. Or you could trade him for some parts if he needs anything. It takes about 10 minutes and they'll never come back.

Gordon,

Don't let it scare you. Give us a call and we can explain how to get headers easily installed on your vehicle. They are a very worthwhile mod and make a very noticeable increase in power!

get block off plates for the AIR and EGR, then visit www.HPTuners.com and buy their software. you can fix the codes and functions related to the emissions systems being removed and do a full tune on your car while you are at it to unlock the rest of the power that is sitting there dying to get out.

BTW, where in Oneonta do you lie? i have family all over the southern tier, mostly out towards norwich

If i decided to get the "race style" headers, do i just remove the EGR and AIR systems? Do i need anything else? And i did a search on here, and some one did a write up, but the pictures are missing now... I will be geting my tune from Redline Motorsports.

if you remove the EGR and still have an LS1 intake, you need a plug to plug up that hole on top of hte intake where the EGR tube comes in now, and with AIR, you need to plug up the hole left in your lid, or better yet, just get a lid for 98-99 cars.

Go call up Vince Trifecta. He'll mail you a handheld tuner for ~$100 that plugs into your diagnostic port underneath your steering wheel. It flashes your PCM and gets rid of your codes. For example, he sent me a tuner to recalibrate my speedometer from a rear gear swap and delete my codes from my headers. He charged me $125 shipped and my speedometer works perfectly and I'm not throwing any codes. It took less than 10 minutes to do this, and that includes hooking up the device and flashing the computer. Easy as pie.

You talking to me? If you are, Vince is a sponsor. Check out his site. He's a good guy, can't beat his prices:

$100 for a rear gear calibration AND emissions code deletion is a pretty good deal IMO. He'll give you a full custom tune for a few dollars more. I only declined the custom tune because I plan on getting a dynotune at a semi-local shop soon.

His flash tuner that he sends you is awesome. Most other companies make you send your PCM away or send you a PCM and charge you a core charge. He just mails you a tuner and you flash it yourself in under 10 minutes. If I ever needed any tuning done via the mail again, I wouldn't hesitate to go through him again.

No problem, glad to help That flash tuner Vince sends out makes things a lot easier for everyone. If you can't find someone local to do it, Vince is the guy to go to. Vince is located all the way in Washington state and I live in NJ...clear across the country...and the tuner still made it to my house in less than a week. I strongly recommend him. If you have any questions, PM him. I PM'd him 3 times with questions and each time he answered within 2 MINUTES. Seriously. Great product, great customer service, great price, great guy.
