I'm planning on installing a set of Hooker longtubes on my 99 SS this weeked, but I'm having a Y-Pipe custom made. In order to get the Y on, I'll have to get the car to the exhaust shop. I'm wondering if it would be safe for me to drive the car to the exhaust shop running open headers. I don't want any problems, so if there is a significant risk, I'll probably just get the car towed. Will I be safe running open headers for that distance? If I do, is there anything I should or shouldn't do to ensure safety?
Thanks,
Josh

you'll be fine. I was in the same boat and drove about 40 minutes to my destination. It's loud as hell and I'd say run it in 5th gear to tolerate the vibration and header drone, it's too loud in 6th wide open headers. It will not hurt your valves or anything just take it slow....your going to love longtubes dude, good luck!

only thing id even think could be a prob is the heat being relased right under your car might mess something up id expect you'd see flames when u get on it (mabye om not too sure)

The only thing I can think would be a problem with running open headers alot is its rough on the O2 sensors mounted in the headers. Something about the fresh air getting in there can foul the sensors over time.

Well, I just drove the car to the exhuast shop this morning without any problems, thank goodness. It sure sounded awesome, but it seems like it would've rattled my car apart if I had driven it any further.
