Its a good Idea to , but alot of people don't. Some tend to back out when reused. Cheap insurance just to replace it..

It is torque to yield [TTY], stretched, just like the head bolts. About $4 at the GM dealer. There is no keyway. A frien of min had his balancer spin on him.

As stated, the stock GM bolt is a torque-to-yield bolt, so when properly tightened, the bolt has technically failed. That's why you don't reuse them...people have done it before, and they have even gotten away with it, but why take the chance?

If you don't ever want to have to replace the bolt, ARP makes one that is not a torque to yield design that can be reused. Not quite as cheap as the GM bolt though...

I'm thinking the major reason people find the crank bolt hole has been stripped is because people try to re-use the TTY bolts that shear apart while torquing them down. Just a guess though....

The bolt is quite large, coated and special with its tensile strength. I'm not surprised at that price. I don't know where people get the low price on them but I've never looked into it. My heads and cam came with the bolt in the kit. There are a couple of discounters around that may be able to get you a better price. I definitely would check with NAPA or other parts stores to make sure it isn't a standard available item.

Agreed, I will be using a ARP bolt. Even though its techincally not needed, the pulley is pressed fitted, I guess its used to hold tension but either way pinning the crank is considered the best thing that can be done.

GM bolt is $4

damn cheap insurance... heck my march underpulley came with one for free because it's so damn cheap.

You never re use TTY bolts, that's just asking for trouble.
