The "Y Pipe" - a flawed design?
Very interesting discussion, and indepth, so I hope you guys don't mind a n00b-ish question, but, don't most Y-pipes connect on the side of the car (rather than the center)? Wouldn't that lead to un-evenness between the 2 sides of the engine (as one side has a shorter, straighter path than the other)?

Thats part of the cause.
Equal length tubing will provide a smoother tuned sound. Checkout ls1sounds and compare the sounds of different headers. The slp equal length headers sound the smoothest and the macs are the harshest.

That doesn't make sense because with cats the rasp goes away. LT1 cars use the same y-pipes without the rasp. That tells you it's really caused by the exhaust/head layout of the LS1 vs the older style small block.
This is just what I've read. Cats reducing rasp doesn't suprise me, it's a restriction in the exhaust, I can see it reducing noise and rasp.

This merge is similar to headers with hvm collector qtps use.
I think PatG used the burns merge with a 3" to 3.5" transition as an expansion cone. I could be wrong

I didnt mean any disrepect or wise guy attitude. chicago area only checks for codes. If u show up with open headers, as long as the computer sez everything is ok. theres nothing they can do.
Actually, that's wrong. It's a federal law that you can't alter emission's equipment. That means no removing emission equipment and you also can't move the location of it. So removing cats and AIR stuff is illegal in every state. Some states choose not to care at the moment, but eventually the federal gov't will take away their highway funds until they start enforcing stricter inspections like we have here in NJ. Obviously people get away with running longtubes with no cats or AIR. But it's probably just a matter of time before that changes.
The y-pipe I built for Patrick is 3" off the LT. Then into a 3" to 4" burns merge collector (from LG motorsports). Then a 4" QTP cut-out and then reduces back down to 3". Muffler is the Dual Dual. Tucks up under the car with no cleareance issues and no bagging.
We dynoed the car with 20" extensions on the car and with the new Y and lost no hp or tq (picked up mor tq down low) then when went through the dual dual we lost 9hp.
