exhaust piping size??

exhaust piping size?? so i went to this shop that does custom exhaust and they guy said my stock piping is 2.5 inch so he just wanted to reuse that pipe and get a muffler and new tips. i was looking into getttin a 3 inch y pipe so would reusing the stock 2.5 inch pipe pretty much defeat the purpose of the 3in y pipe or should i get 3 in exhaust piping or what im not sure what the best set up would be. i have a bone stock 02 ws6.

If you plan on keeping it stock, stick with the 2.5 inch tubing for everything. If your gonna be modding you car, adding headers, changing out the cam, F/I, etc. I would then recommend going 3 inch now, becuase its worth a couple extra HP when the modding begins... Don't get 3 inch tubing and 2.5 in mufflers! I don't know why but people do this but i see this all the time.
sry to hijack thread but i have a question relating to this issue. How bad does it hurt the flow to go from a 3" pipe to a 2.5" muffler? I bought a magnaflow muffler a while back and I just love the sound of the thing, but im getting headers soon and they will definitly be 3". Is having a 2.5" muffler a big problem or will it work and still show good power with headers at least until I can afford a muffler I really want more?
FWIW the stock I pipe size is 2.75", and it necks down to 2.5" right before the muffler. What you want depends on what you are going to do...if you plan on keeping the car basically stock, its probably not worth your time to worry about the exhaust size...however on the other side once you get a muffler and pay to have it welded in you aren't that far off of the price of a decent 3" cat back system anyway. If you plan on a decent amount of mods you probably want to go with a bigger pipe size or even a dual setup.

Go for a cat-back set up like Magnaflow even SLP Loudmouth or something along those lines. It will look and sound much better and even if you do start modding it takes quite a bit to grow out of one.
