are SS hoods really functional???

are SS hoods really functional??? they seem very restrictive unlike the ws6 hoods induction. just wondering if they actually gain anything over a standard flat hood?

From what i have read on here and the camaroz28.com forum, ram air is a great marketing scheme GM came up with years ago. Apparently you can't get moving enough to actually build up pressure to "ram" air into the engine until speeds above 100mph. This is all here say and I have no experience with it first hand so don't hold me responsible for anything i say. 
I think that using a CAI or something like FTRA that picks colder aid up from under the car is suppose to be better.

I wouldnt say that they are HIGHLY functional, but they definately supply the entrance of the intake with cooler air than a non- SS or WS6 Hood. That said....if you are savvy enough to set up a seal for the hood to lid, you have a nicely functional hood.
If you debaffle a hood and seal it, it's beneficial, because of the lower intake temps and when you hit higher speeds, the better. For proof, go to the advanced section, someone even proved it. So far I've only debaffled mine, haven't sealed it yet.

They do bring in cooler air. As for restrictive, I don't think so an engine can only take so much air in at one time and I've never seen a test thats shown an area before the throttle body being void of any air because the engine is sucking it in quicker than it can get there. It may not be what the original definition of ram air was, but it does have its benefits of bringing in cooler air. Older cars with carbs have always benefited from ram air and cowl induction hoods, why not f-bodys? Either you get the hot engine air from under the hood, or you bring in cooler air from outside the engine bay.

usually people cut out the opening in front of the air box.....i mean it;s not something you would list as a mod...."ram air" but there is more air to the air box than on a stock hood i think.....

I have the LT1 style hood scoop on my 01 SS (not sure who makes it)... not sure about power, but at highway speeds intake temp is usually right at ambient (atleast thats what the predator says). Id say it works pretty well.
