Default Why run a big cam in a daily driver?

Just curious what positive gains you see by running a huge cam such as the donkey dick in a daily driven street car?

What are the advantages in the big cam over say a 224 or 228 duration cam in the midrange of the curve(the part you'll be in most on the street).

thanks

Mark

I had a vx3 in my car before the vindicator II cam and it was a good midrange cam but the vindicator just pulls so hard up top anything about 4 grand. the vx3 had better street manners but the big cam to me is stronger up top where it counts.

On a car that sees mostly track then street go max effort cam. Vice versa nothing smaller than 228R. My 2 cents

No reason to get a donkey dick cam for a DD. I kind of regretting getting the T2 when it was my DD. I actually wish I would of went smaller for better DD then have spray for the track.

A small cam and heads will beat 99% of the cars on the street. Some just love the sound of the huge cams.

Unless you have all the supporting mods a huge cam really insn't all that great.

IMO why not go with a big cam? you dont need much throttle to keep up with traffic?

i dont see the justification of putting a donkey dick cam in a DD other than being able to say your cam is bigger than Mt. Everest. at the track they shine like no other but on the street i just cant see where the justification is. ill take my medium cam and be happy.

It's to win street races, all the same as the track. If you've got a brain, you just SHIFT GEARS to get to the big cam's desired rev range. EVEN ON THE STREET.

Why do people not get that? They act like they can't shift because it's on the street.

Heck yeah so I should keep the rpm's between 5,000-7,000 on the street all the time to feel that mad powa! What if I'm just rolling off from a redlight and want to nail it, that small cam car might be too far ahead to reel in if I've only got a 2,000 rpm window to make power right? Heck for that matter the stock cam makes better power from 2,000-4,500 than most of the big cams I've seen?

It depends on what you are willing to live with as far as street maners. Some don't mind a few driveability issues and feel the need for a max effort cam at all costs. I have a little less tolerance for lumpy cams in a daily driver than I did 20 years ago, or for even just a weekend car. And I like to keep the lift to about .600 to minimize the strain on valvetrain components. You can make great power over a broad rpm range with a medium sized cam and some decent heads, and run some pretty quick times also. So this is the way I prefer to go.

viper, im running the same cam as you. the MTI X1. i plan on slapping some heads with this cam either some TSP 5.3 or going with AFR 205 and it should be a very stout combo.

u really dont need a huge cam.. just ask GT GRILLER and his little 226/226 patriot cam beating a MS3 on the street from a dig..

also, 1BAD02WS6 is running the MTI X1 and pulled on a MS3 and 233/239 cam from a roll!!

could not have said it better, half of the donkey dick cammed cars get beat on the street by smaller cammed cars b/c their power band is so high that by the time they get there the other car is too many cars ahead and cant be caught.

but at the track donkey dick cams seem to work well, so dont think i hate em i just think some folks need to be realistick when cam shopping and not buy the biggest baddest cam out to make crazy power be unsatisfied later on down the road.

This has been beaten to death. If you're going WOT at 2000-4500rpm, you're doing it wrong and will get beaten no matter what cam. Cams that make impressive low to mid range power belong in heavy vehicles like a truck or RV.

My old heads and mild cam setup made more power and torque below 5000rpm at WOT. The new "donkey dick" setup makes all its gains above that, and extends the usable rpm range. Not only is the newer setup much faster, but the drivability and around town feel at part throttle is near identical.

If you really want that low rpm punch and torquey feel for a daily driver, go get yourself an L98 3rd gen.
