Default Another cam vs. mileage thread

This thread is mainly focused on city MPG so that's why i don't post hwy options in poll.

228/232 with anywhere from 11-15 (that's an amazing day) in the city and 20-23 hwy.

What sounds about right?

Just a note. If gas mileage is that much of a problem where it is the deciding factor of what cam to get, then you have other priorities in life to worry about then modding your car. Been there, done that.

bongva, just take the number of miles u drive a week, multiply it times 52 to get an annual total of miles driven, then take the total miles driven and divide by an avg mpg to find the # of gals of gas, next mulitply the gals and the price of gas:

stock ex: 230 mi/wk = 12k mi/yr
avg mpg = 22 mpg
est fuel cost = 545.45 gal * price of gas (est $2.499) = $1,363.09

vs

big cam ex: 230 mi/wk = 12k mi/yr
avg mpg = 17.5 mpg (14 cty + 21 hwy)
est fuel cost = 685.71 gal * price of gas (est $2.499) = $1,713.60

DIF = $350.51 gas/yr which is only $6.74/wk

...so as u can see, it's not that big of a DIF...

By those figures, it is a 25.7% increase in fuel consumption BTW. So while $6.74 a week extra doesn't sound like much, it is a healthy increase!

Mine's never been that great around town but that's my own fault. On the highway, however, I average 27mpg at 70mph even with my 230/232 cam and all the bolt-ons.

My city is half of my highway, I can eek out around 14-17mpg in city, while on highway (depends on right foot), 27-29mpg.

TR224-112 with a m6. It's all in the tune for the mileage on highway, it takes very little power to maintain highway speed, so all you need to make sure of is that in those lower cruising rpm, that you get the timing up as high as it can go and lean it out as much as possible. Also if you managed to keep EGR on the car, then you get to eek out even more timing. That's how I've managed to keep my highway mileage up there with stock despite being cammed, with full bolt ons.

well the mileage does not suffer as much on "long drives" i.e. highway, so it wont be a big concern if you do alot of highway to moms house.

Id hold out on the cam till you get a new DD so you don't have to worry about MPG so much.

Voted 15-18(18 with smooth drivin), with a small TR22x cam. It gets ugly if I go WOT too often (10-15). But highway is around 30mpg(3:42)!!! In town, its very very reasonnable if I drive like the pope(shift under 2K), and I do most of the time because it has become my DD for the last month before storing the car..And I dont want to break anything else this year.

Get the cam and adapt your driving style.

Why is there a cam in your sig? Already installed??!! LOL

Strap on some AFR 205s and an LS6 cam and lose nothing, gain power, and maybe even pick up a MPG or two.
