Default Ms3 or ms4 need opinions please

i have a 2001 z28 with the following mods: slp forced air induction, k&n air filter, slp lid, smooth bellow,85mm bbk tb,stock ls6 intake, long tube headers,3'' slp exhaust, spec stage 2 clutch, chrome molly steel flywheel(14lb),a 100-150 shot of juice that i havent put in and some small suspension work. I HAVE IT FOR SALE BUT NOT SURE IF I WANT TO LET IT GO!

BUT I WANT TO KNOW IF I SHOULD USE A MS3 OR MS4 CAM WITH MY STOCK HEADS??

i have almost the same setup as u and i have the ms3 cam in mine. its a nice cam but its kinda peaky and really doesnt make "power" until a little after 4k. and with the ms4 im pretty sure u have to flycut the pistons. if i were to do it over again i might pick a cam that has a little more power under the curve. if u are really set on getting a texas speed cam give them a call and tell them what u want to have power wise and they can set up what u will need.

i have a similar setup to yours with an ms4. did NOT have to flycut the pistons. i drive it to work everyday and is very streetable. 21 mpg on the highway with 4:10 gears crusin at 70mph with a 6 speed it made 402hp 393tq at the wheels

There are better cams that will give more power for street driving. Poster above me said he made 402 and 393 with an MS4. I have a street sweeper HT and made 400 and 380 at the wheels....I'm almost willing to bet my power comes on sooner too.

IMO there are better cam choices....if you want a donkey dick cam, there is the polluter which seems to have a better under the curve dyno sheet average then the MS4.

408 z28 is the only person I have seen that said he didnt have to flycut for the ms4, im not sayin you have to im sayin thats all ive ever seen was that you do have to.

ok that being said, bothy are good cams, the ms4 makes more power
ive riden/driven cars with both... up top the ms4 screams
both cams are dogs down low if you dont have low gears you will hate those cams for everyday driving.

me personally, there are wayyyyy to many people out there that can get you a custom cam setup depending on all of your go fast parts and what your intentions are.

i went custom, most people will agree!

i had an ms4 in my old set up and loved it. I ALSO DID NOT HAVE TO FLYCUT^^^ stock heads are a 2.00 and 1.55 vaulves any bigger and you do have to flycut. my ms4 ripped hard and i drove it over 2 hours to work every day and had no problems what so ever. i dont think it will like much more than a 150 shot due to the lower lsa.

I love my ms4 and it made much more power than my 231/237 tsp cam. Made a lot under the curve too. My 231/237 was more peaky than the Ms4 too.

heres a before and after graph. I also added a fast 90/90 which shouldnt have helped the numbers down low over my ls6 intake i had previously

i had the ms4 in mine but i had a 4000 stall which is the only reason i went with it. its in a stalled auto there really is no such thing as low end power and really shines up top. imo id get a custom cam made for your needs with a 6 speed. get more power under the curve you wont regret it.

are you saying you gained 59rwhp going from a 231/237 cam to a ms4 with a fast 90/90 too???

i say go smaller for a street car...but most people just on the peak hp bandwagon......if you like TSP they make alot of other cams that would fit a daily driver better...228-234 range...

i personally wouldnt go any larger than my 230/230 for a daily driver...

El torro should be ur choice then...and it still pulls to 6600+ with LS6 intake. 230/230 .612/.592 111+2 awsome awsome AWSOME under the curve power! search for El torro and look at the TQ curves on the dyno sheets...hope this helps man

My friend has a 6 speed ms3 trans am with bolt ons and 4.11's. He only has let two other people drive it me and another one of our friends.(We do a lot of work on his car) He loves that cam, i love that cam and so does my other friend. It is kinda peaky but thats what made that car so much fun. It pulled like a normal bolt on ls1 until about 3,000 rpms. Then it turns into a straight up monster. Its great fun on the street and the track. Another friend we took for a ride said "I feel bad for your seat hinges" So that might put how violent the car can feel at times.

Like Transgression said, I did NOT flycut with my MS4 camshaft. What are your future goals with the car? Are you building a racecar? Streetcar? Daily Driver? A MS4 is a geat camshaft if your trying to run a number with a cam only setup, or stock head setup. Like others said, it makes a lot of its power up top, but still has some power under the curve.

dont put your opinion in unless you know what your talking about...

you do NOT have to flycut with stock size valves.. meaning on stock heads you do NOT have to flycut.. when you buy new heads, if you buy them with STOCK VALVES you do NOT have to flycut then either.. i ran an ms4 with my stock heads, and am still running the ms4 cam without flycutting on PRC ls6s...

again, you do NOT have to flycut with stock valve sizes.. i drive mine about 60 miles a day... 410s 4k stall porte 9090 full exhaust ms4 PRC ls6s etc..
i make right at 425 to the ground..

ms4 loves the juice... i havnt sprayed mine yet, but another friend has close to same setup and sprays a 200... runs strong as hell....

to the OP for my opinion... with the ls6 intake you arent going to let the ms4 breath enough up top (where it needs to)... my opinion would to be get a ms3.. i love the MS cams.. awesome power, fine for DD, awesome performers..

the ms3 will better suit your setup.. so that means you should make the same power with the ms3 or ms4, but the ms3 will be more street friendly and easier to tune..
