Is this going to be on a forced induction setup?

I may have not worded my ? correctly. Do we need headbolts for an Ls1 or a LQ9? Thats what my brain was telling my fingers to type but they weren't listening!

You can use head bolts for the ls1 on lq9 heads but... Studs are recomened for FI so the heads don't lift.

make sure you use the 6 liter gaskets instead of the 5.7. the 5.7 gaskets will overhang in to the combustion chamber and you don't want that. good luck

I ran studs on my H/C setup. ARP studs are the way to go. You pay a little more but I think they are worth it.

It depends on the year of the block, not really whether it is an LS1, LQ9, 5.7L, 6.0L, 6.2L. From 1997 to ~2003 GM used different length head bolts on the outer edges of all their blocks. Some where in 2003 and currently in use, GM switched to all the head bolts being the same length in their blocks. You need to find out what year the block is or compare the head blocks from you block to each other. If you find different lengths, then you know what to get.

If your not gonna run studs in a boosted application I'd be willing to bet it won't be long before the heads lift. Almost guarenteed if you try to cheap out with stock head bolts. Unless your only running low low boost.

I know if I spent the money to be boosted I'd definetly get the ARP studs. It's the smart thing to do anyway.

So just to make sure its clarified, with a 98 ls1 block and 317 heads with center bolt valve covers, and ls9 head gaskets, I CAN use the bolt or stud kit that is for a 98 ls1 block right?

Indeed you can. Your block has the unequal length bolts. 03’ish and up use equal length bolts.

The heads don't care which bolts you use. You go by which block you have and you can put on any of the LS line of heads.

Couple options..... Spend the money and get the ARP studs and LS9 gaskets and be done with it. Buy the cheap studs and get it all put together and snap one off in the head when torquing them down, Or use the TTY bolts and chance it. Sloppy has put down some serious boost numbers on TTY bolts but I dont recommend it.

not doing TTY bolts. not even gonna waste my time lol
Although I've heard many guys use the cheap head studs with success, I'd be worried about the tq specs as they are all over the place. I've heard like ARP, I've heard 10lbs less, I've heard dry, oiled, loctite, no loctite, antisize, all kinds of stuff. lol
At least ARP is consistent, including their price. Do wish they would come down in price at least. theres enough heads studs in the world now to not justify a $300 price tag for some threaded, heat treated, rods... seriously.
