Default LS1 vs LS6 cam dyno graph

A couple weeks ago I asked about putting an LS6 cam in an otherwise stock 99 LS1 A4 F-body, stock tuning, etc. Well, I found a 2002 LS6 cam and LS6 valvesprings used for $150, and put them in this past weekend. My GF wanted more topend power, but OEM reliability, and that is what she got. I'll probably bump up the shift points and rev limiter in a few months.

Anyway, the topend really shows what the LS6 cam can do.

BTW, as others have said, even in the A4 it idles exactly like stock. I doubt there's anybody on this board that'd know it had a cam from just standing behind it.

I think thats a damn good improvement for a factory cam swap. Is her car completely stock?

This is the first dyno I've seen from just an LS6 cam swap on a nearly stock LS1 engine.

Her car has a LID. The 298rwhp number was with the lid. I imagine stock it was 290rwhp or so.

31rwhp for $155 for cam/springs plus $120 for lid.

Excellent info Jon. I don't think anyone here is crazy enough to swap a cam on a stock car, and then dyno it! She needs some headers next

Ahem, what about adding heads & a cam to a stock car then dynoing it?

I've done that 3 times actually. First time was 362rwhp, second time was 363rwhp, third time was 393rwhp.

<raises hand>Yes, I'm a dyno *****.

Hey now!

I resemble that remark! :p

Now your girl has more NA power than I do!

I'm still using factory cats, exhaust manifolds, intake, and TQ convertor, so that gain is right up my alley!

Nice info Jon thanx for posting!

The best acceleration with the Z06 engine involves shifting at ~6800 with a stick. Bump her up, up, up. I've seen a couple guys run the Z06 and only pick up .1 in the quarter with an A4. Why? If the trans shifts at 6000 in 1st gear, RPM drops to ~3200 into 2nd.

Look at the curve at <4200. You Are LOSING HP for 1/3 of time you are in gear. Now if you shift at 6800, still it drops to 3600'ish, but now you are losing power only about 1/5 the time you are accelerating.

This is why everyone ragged on the LS6 cams, because they were afraid to spin the motor. I'd venture at guess that at 6200 rpm (LS6 peak) you will be 50rwhp ahead. And that's a chitload.

How about adding 4:10's to the A4 car, will that help to use the cam in the upper reach of the powerband?

It's the RPM drop between first and second gear that kills you. With 4.10's the rpm drop duration will be shorter, but it will still fall to the same RPM. You will have a great 1/8th to 1/4 time split, but a lousy 1/8th mile ET.

I will very much disagree with your 50rwhp comment, but yes, obviously a cam is only part of the puzzle for optimal performance. I figured that went without saying.

Compare the LS1 graph AT 6200 (redline), and the LS6 at 6200. I'll buy you a sixpack if it ain't 50HP.

Here's another 6pk for you:

I bet if you get the car to shift at 6800-6900 on the 1-2 and 2-3, it will pick up a solid 1/2 second in the quarter.

compared to the LS1 cam. Since the LS6 cam has such a huge LSA, it wants to spin higher than aftermarket cams of the same duration for best ET's.

An LS6 engine vs an LS6, sure, we're talking about just the cam! The heads have something to do with it you know. Putting an LS6 cam in a stock LS1 is not going to give you 50rwhp, and that is all I was disagreeing with.

A stock A4 with stock converter, and stock everything else is not going to gain half a second in the 1/4 just from the cam alone.

I think McRat is right, on the 50hp thing. Its right there on the graph.

If you look at the 6K mark the stock is almost at 275 and the LS6 hasn't even peaked yet and is almost hitting 325.

Thats a nice sleeper cam!!
