Default How to check Piston to Valve Clearance?

This weekend (with the guidance of a friend of mine who's done his 224 cam install), we're putting in a TSP231/237, .598"/.595", 112 LSA.
We're following the JMX write up. All the parts and tools are ready to go.
Since this is a high lift cam, I'd like to check the Piston to Valve clearance. What is the best method?

Thanks.

You shouldn't have any problems with stock heads just as long as you line the chain up dot-to-dot.
Do a search on checking P/V clearance. There is easier ways than Clay and you don't have to remove the Heads.

I'm running that cam.. you'll be fine if your heads aren't milled any. The only problems you guys will run into will be traction related after the install!!

Is there a write up somewhere regarding the method? Do heads have to come off to do clay? This would be a problem.
I'm only unassembling the rockers. Springs are staying put (918's already in).

Thanks.

Yeah, you'd have to take the heads off to clay it.

You can use the 'drop valve' method if you have a degree wheel, checking springs, & a dial indicator.
1. Install the checking springs on one cylinder.
2. Install the pushrods/RR's on that cylinder like normal, but with 'Zero' preload in the lifters.
3. TDC the degree wheel on the same cylinder.
4. Setup the dial indicator preloaded to ~.500-.600 on the retainer of one of the valves with the cheking springs.
5. Move the crank to 20 BTDC on the overlap cycle.
6. Push down on the valve tip with your finger & note the amount of movement in the dial indicator. This is your P2V clearance at that degree minus lifter peload.
7. Repeat setps 5 & 6 in 5 degree increments from 20BTDC to 20ATDC on both intake & exhaust valves. Note the closest spot.
