Do you have an idea of how much you spent on the build?

I would be a lil worried of a ms3 type cam on a 140k stock bottom end..... especially on a 98 car. Just saying. Boom

Actually yes. I kept an excel spreadsheet of every expense of the build.

LS7 Clutch/PP/Flywheel
LS6 Intake Kit
Pacesetter Headers/Y pipe
3" Pipe Cutouts
36# Fuel Injectors
LS1 Slave Cyl. Pilot Bearing
MS3 Cam kit
LS6 Ported Oil Pump
LS2 Timing Chain
Balancer Install Tool
Spring Compresser Tool
Tune
Valve Seals
LS7 Lifters
Head Gaskets/head bolts
Fluids
Misc.

And total it came out to $3,461.15

Thats a little cheaper than it would all be new as some of the stuff i bought through here, and some friends. They're all new parts but I happend to come across a few that were being sold that people werent going to use etc. so i saved a couple hundred by doing that and accumulating the parts over the period of a couple months instead of all at once.

if i had to make a guess id just say because 140k means its getting fairly worn down. MS3's like RPM's i had my rev limiter set at 6600 but most people get them set towards 6800-7000. Mine was still making power at 6500 but it was pretty much leveled off and with more intake mods im sure it would make significant power well past 6500... and spooling the motor to those rpm's really really hammers on the bearings which are typically the first big thing to wear out on high mileage engines. not to mention everything else needing replaced ie water pump, oil pump timing chain etc etc.

The whole issue of it being a 98 the only thing i can think of is just because theyre the oldest ones... i dont think the structure of engine is any different from the 99+ ones except for the bolt style for the valve covers which is miniscule. Electronics are different but i doubt that bothers it structurally.

so hopefully i didnt stick my foot in my mouth too bad... but thats what ive come to hear on that issue...

From what i have heard it has to do with rod bolts.... 98-00 motors are not as strong in that area. Something about the rod bolts that is not as stout as the 01-02's. I have been told since i have a 02 that i should feel more comfortable spinning the motor to 6800 or 7000 on a stock bottom end more so than the guy with a 98-00 motor. Are they that much stronger..... probably not. Are people going to bank on the fact that they are stronger......I know i am not. however that is what i have gathered from all of my readings. I know i have my rev limiter set to 6800 and my shift light set to 6600. I take everything i read on the interwebz with a grain of salt. What i have heard really just made me feel better about doing a cam in the first place. If i had a 2000 or older car i would have probably pulled the whole motor and gone with a forged bottom end (or at least better rod bolts) if i wanted a cam that bad. Lets face it .... the last thing any of us want is a motor that is a ticking bomb..... Er....wait.... aren't they all? lol

Great Build!!! Rip on it till you have to forge her!!!

I have also heard through the grape vine something about the rod bolt differances between 98-00 and 01-02. I know guys though with a D1SC Procharger on a 2000 making 640 hp on stock bottom end running 11.5's in Colorado @5800 feet Also... So it just depends!!!
