Default Changing oil pump and timing chain

I am currently doing a head and camshaft change on an 04 GTO. The car only has 30k miles on it, so I was wondering if my stock oil pump and timing chain will work just fine. I have the TSP224 camshaft and PRC 5.3 Stage 2.5 heads. On a low mileage vehicle like mines, will my stock oil pump and timing chain be ok?

You will get advise from both sides of the coin on this one . With that being said ... seeing that your motor has only 30,000 miles and it's a 2004 which had no issues with the oil pumps like the older ls1 had , I would not hesitate to reuse them, at least the oil pump anyway . . It probably wouldn't hurt to buy a new ls2 chain seeing they are only like $25 from SDPC . .

While your in there, might as well replace every part that has a possibility of wearing. It never ends.

If $ are no object, might as well buy a new ZR1.

I am doing a cam swap next month on a 40k engine. It will get a new timing chain, but I'm going to roll the dice on re-using the oil pump. I gotta draw the line somewhere.

I don't think you can drill holes in the bottom of the lifter trays...I have seen some drill them on the side though.

How difficult is it to change the oil pump and timing chain? I was told that it is a pain to do them because the oil pan has to be taken off. Does the oil pan have to be taken off, or does it have to be dropped?

So if I drop the pan, will I have any issues or leaks when I try to seal it back up since I will not be changing the oil pan gasket?

You don't have to drop the pan unless you drop the pickup tube bolt into the oil pan.

dont know about the gtos but with mine i had to loosen all the bolts for the oil pan to let the front drop about an inch. i chased an oil pan leak for the next 6 months until finally pulling the k member and pan completely. but mine had 100k and i think yours will prolly be fine to reseal itself. i would trust the oil pump but i would prolly swap chain just for piece of mind.

You have to drop the pan down as far as the k member will let it if you plan on changing the timing chain because you have to remove the oil pump to replace the timing chain . As long as you are carefull not to damage the pan gasket you should not have any problems with leaks . Look on LS1howto .com , there is a lot of good reading and pictures there to help guide you .
