Unhappy can you do head gaskets without pulling the motor?

this might sound dumb. i ask cuz i never really worked on many ls1 motors in cars that actually have ls1's in them. i have put them in my 68 camaro an
s-10 and my mustang. but i have abuddy who has a 98 t/a and he asked if i would chnge his head gasket (only one is bad? and he only wants to do that one????) anyway, i looked it up and it says 13 hours to do both 8.7 for one and 7.3 for the other side.

that got me thinkin there must be some stuff in the way and maybe you have to drop the cradle. im hoping not cuz i really dont want go that far (im lazy) i do have my own lift at my house so it wouldnt be that bad but i was just hoping there was an easier way to do it? anyone know?

Last one i pulled apart i had the heads off in about 2.5 hrs.
engine stays in car, not a big deal at all.

Driverside is easier. There is more room to get to the bottom head bolts. Heads can be swapped fairly easily. Make sure that the head is resurfaced, the block deck is clean, and copper spray the gaskets.

yea for sure.. very easy actually. I can do a head swap correctly on a fbod in about a day.

I cleaned everything pretty good with a razorblade... but that's about the extent that I went... everything seems to be doing good... but now you have me worried...

thanks for the replys guys. i'll run a straightedge across the head. but if she straigh i will just put it back together. he's wanting to trade it in (this is one of his toys) he's thinkin maybe goat????

i had a feeling i wouldnt have to drop the motor down. i wonder why the chilton labor giude calls for so many hours?

Resurfacing is not always necessary, but should always be checked. Especially if the motor popped a head gasket. Some people will say that copper spray isn't necessary, but find someone that denies that it offers extra sealing strength.

I agree you should resurface IF you popped a head gasket due to overheating. Not needed for a head/cam swap though. Just clean them real good.

no... i just had to pull the head to get some seized spark plugs out... then replaced it with a new gasket after I cleaned off all the old crap with a razor... torqued it all down in sequence at 85ft./lbs...
