Question Blue Smoke Coming From Exhaust

I have noticed some blue smoke ever since i got my cam installed (1/2007) but recently when i went for my retune jsut this past Friday..

After my tuner was making sure the tune for my 85mm MAF and 42# injectors was all in order he made a couple pulls up to 108mph and holding it there checking the log with HP Tuners. then when the car cam back down to idle BLUE smoke was pouring out the tail pipes

But it was not everytime.. I thought maybe b/c the car was dumping fuel until he zeroed in the injectors. But then today i was backing the car into the garage and there was the blue smoke again. But this time it was not pouring out, jsut puffing out with the pulse of the cam...

Is this a sign of bad rings or valve seals?

Do a compression and leak down test.

It will tell you what cylinder is giving you the problem. Also when you do a leak down test you have both intake and exhaust valves closed so if the cylinder can't hold air pressure you know it's going by the rings. Do you have a air compressor? Can you change your own plugs?

I do not have an air compressor, but can get access to one. And yes i can change my own plugs. I am mechinally inclined, i have never done a compression test before..

What else do i need to know?

Compression test... you remove all the plugs and get a fitting that threads into the spark plug hole. There is a gauge on the other end. Pull the fuel pump fuse and push the gas pedal to the floor and turn the engine over a couple of times. Go take a reading of the gauge. Repeat on the next 7 cylinders. A low # is not good and you want all the cylinders to be close in compression to each other. Leak down... When you go and buy the gauge and spark plug fittings you can buy a kit that has a air chuck fitting that will plug on to a air hose you pump the cylinder up and watch the gauge to see if it bleeds the air out. Not to hard of a job more time consuming then any thing, and you don't need the biggest badest air compressor on the block either.

If he let it slow back down wo pushing the clutch in it will smoke, I would not worry about it unless it is doing it all the time or on throttle. I had the same thing happen to my c5 on decel. I also had hufing at idle and on throttle. I ended up replacing my viton valve seals and fixed the problem

That is exactly it, on decel he did not pch the clutch in, jsut let it slow down naturally. Why does it smoke like that? It does not do it all the time.

Got a buddy with a similar problem.... after cam install he now has blue smoke at idle and whatnot. I wonder if valve seals are the problem here... he tends to think so however we revisited them and made sure they were all tapped on tight and whatnot. All were good.

I noticed some oil smoke at startup in one of your recent exhaust vids. Bad valve seals will cause smoke at startup and deceleration, I'd start there (cheap/easy). If that doesn't fix, then compression/leakdown.

I am sure you did

Thanks, i am sure that the valve seals are going bad

To replace them do you have to take the heads off?

Nope just the valve covers and the springs. I suggest getting a crane tool for the springs.... makes the job twice as fast.

I'm not suggesting your engine is on it's death bed, but it's never a bad idea to do a compression and leak down test.

just got done with my cam install and fired it last night and have the same problem. the car onlt has 30000 miles on it so im thinking its just the valve seal. im not sure about this but when i installed the partiot valves springs it came with valve seals but they would not fit tight on the valve so i just reused the originals since they looked good but it still puffin a little smole at idle. my car is not tuned yet and i just cut the cats out so maybe thats it, i dunno but would like an answer
