dropped a lifter :(

**** happens. Live and learn. Use a dowel next time to hold them in place.
Just drop the pan. Chances are it made it to the bottom. If not, you can always slowly rotate the crank and it should come out. You should be able to leave the motor in the car, just lower the K-member.

You can probably fish the lifter out. Most times, it'll fall and sit right on top of the crank/rods. Use a mirror and look through the cam holes, or pull the valley cover off. I've fished out many lifters in my day.
Just an FYI for those using the magnets. Those things are a false sense of reality, and do absolutely nothing for you unless they're supported from the top as well. IE: Actually pulling on the lifter from the top. If they're just sitting on top of the lifters, you're actually adding more weight to the lifter, to potentially fall out of the retainer tray. If a lifter falls out of the tray and turns just enough, a magnet isn't going to save you from pulling the heads or having to spend a lot of time fishing it out. It may say the lifter from falling all the way in the pan, but it's not going to be able to turn the lifter and pop it back in the retainer. Ask me how I know.....
ONLY use the 5/16 dowel rods on cam swaps.

Ya I was scared as hell when doing my cam swap, bc of this particular situation. I just pulled the old cam out (nothing holding lifters) and installed the new one. No lifters fell, I must have been lucky.
I would go fishing though
