Stealth cams for big motors (409-427ci)
Hi guys,
Lets have a discussion on what your thoughts are on the best stealth cam for larger motors (409-427ci motors)
Target Idle speed: 800rpm
emissions compliant
RWHP peak of 6200rpm
lots of torque
Compression ratio of 11.5:1
Thoughts?
I was thinking a 240/240 on 114LSA and 110ICL would be a nice choice.
What about cams in the 115LSA to 116LSA range?
Chris

This is being worked on right now. Several LS1 specific lobe masters are being ground right now. Some shelf stuff will include some stroker grinds with both OEM headed stuff, OEM modifed, and aftermarket stuff. Current profiles are being tested as we speak and should be ready for the consumer around Feb. Also a new hyd. roller lifter will be available for the LS1 and should be at the PRI show in Dec.

For emissions compliant (w/o a special one time tune like you did to pass emissions ), I would guess that a little smaller cam would be better. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the big cube motor is held to the same emissions output as the 346?
Maybe 236/236 114 +4 or even 236/232 114 +4.

GMHTP had that black 422 built by MTI a few months ago, it had the R1 cam, and made about 500rwhp at 5800... any bigger than that and it wouldn't be that stealthy... maybe the R1 on a 115lsa would be a bit better for stealth

Also guys don't forget that bigger cams in big cubed motors have much better street manners than they do with stock displacment. My aggressive MTI S1 cam has never stalled on the street with my 427 motor in my 98 A4 vette and the idle is more tame than you might imagine with its specs of 244/244, .612 lift on a 112lsa. The MTI R1 cam in a big cubed motor should purr like a baby and be close to a stock idle with those bigger cubes to support it!

I have a X1 on a 114 in a 387. Its stealthy, but the exhaust makes it considerably less so than it could be. I was talking to Jayson at MTI, who has a 427 in his daily driver C5. Both of us are thinking about moving up to a Z1 (236/236, fast ramp rates) possibly on a 114 LSA. I need to put some cats on my exhaust, and if I do that, the sewing machine noise fomr the front of the car will be the largest giveaway.
Really at this point, especially if you have much more stroke than I do, the Z1 on a 114 or similar will give it self away only from the valvetrain noise.
One of my spring seats *may* have broken through to the intake port *ever* so slightly, and so MTI wants to fix the issue. It may be a good time for a Z1 swap.
If these Eagle crankshafts really are that nice....... I may be finally moving to a 427 as well. We'll have to see. Does this hobby NEVER END???

Jayson currently has that 230/227 X1 cam in his 434ci Vette, and it sounds stock. 495 rwhp and a HUGE 540 ft-lbs! That small cam sure does make torque output climb up alot. Idles/drives like stock, no kidding. My S1 was very drivable, but it did lope a little.
R1 cam in a big motor idles very nicely also. Definitely sneaky!

F-bodies are power suckers on the dyno, eh? lol

Actually, F-bodies, all else being equal, make better power on the dyno due to more efficient drivetrains.
Little cams don't get enough credit. Some folks think you gotta have the biggest baddest stick to make good power. That's not the case when talking about street type (broad) power.
Tony, I don't think I'd agree that Jayson's car idles "stock". Yeah, it is pretty smooth, but it's idled up pretty high too. I sat in it at idle for about 20 minutes one day. That sumbiotch makes SOME KIND of awesome TQ! It'll really throw your head back when he rolls into it!
