Default 317 vs 241

Just bought my 6.0 with the 317s, i was looking to swapping for some 241s to get the compression up and mill them .020 also.

Thig is, i want 10.5 compression on the stock 6.0 slugs, but the 241 might actually hurt flow since they are set up for a 3.9 bore or will they be ok?

Cam i want to use is a 236/242 with .580/.590 lift on a 112 LSA.

Known as the 288 com grind.

So, ditch the 317s or what?

Looking for 450 RWHP out of the heads, i will be porting them myself, i had a set of 317s flowing about 270 @ .600 on a rush job, so i imagine taking more time will net closer to 280 CFM or more.

i bought a set of cnc'd 806s milled a couple thousands off of them and threw on .042 felpros. using that exact same cam as well. so your not the only one on the ditch the 317 band wagon.

unless your doing forced induction get rid of the 317's secondly the 241 is for a 3.9 bore but you can use them on a 6.0L engine.

I fought the fight with the 241s and after $1500 of work on them, 59CC chambers, port and polished, milled .030, you get the picture i was still hating life. now i am running 243s and life is grand.

my .02

Yea, i am getting the 241 fr nothing, straight trade, so i think it is the best route. They will work fine till i swap to a procharger, then things change.

Wanna see what kind of numbers and RPM the cam likes to make.

I am chicken **** and am scared the 6.0 rod bolts wont like the 6800 RPM, so i will be setting the limiter to 6600.

correct me if im wrong but the 317's are just like 243s with a larger combustion chamber, so if you mill the 317s you will have a set of 243s...damn near... so i think if your going to do some work on heads why not go with the 317s over 241s.

either way if your working the heads you should hit some nice numbers!

That is what i hope, i am shooting for 450 to the ground.

As for the heads, a friend told me the 317 cannot be milled that far, so i am running of that advice.

317's are gonna flow better than the 241's unless you have them port/polished. I'd just mill the 317 a little & take advantage of the better flow & give up a little compression unless your stuck on bumping the comp to a certain point.

Lots of guys making good power on 317 on LQ motors with healthy cam. No reason to choke it with 241's if you already got 317's to work with. But thats just my opinion.

Your losing out on that trade imo. Go trade for a set of 243s and you'll be much happier. The 317 are 243 heads with bigger combustion chambers. They flow the same. So you could probably find someone wanting to go fi and needs the bigger chambers.

Yea, this is the opinions i was needing guys.

The cam i wil be probably using is 236/242 @.050, so i am trying to make sure i get at least 10.5 compression. If only having 10 to 1 or so is not going to kill it then fine, i might stick with the 317s, but if i need as much compression as possible with that cam then i will do what i must. I will be porting them myself.

The 236/242 comp grind for the SBC only needs 9.5 compression but it is on a 110 LSA VS the 112 i will be getting for the 6.0.

How much can i mill the 317s? .030?

If i found someone to trade me 243/799 that would solve it for me.

If this is an LQ9 motor, milling the 317 heads .021 should give you 10.5 to 1.
If it is an LQ4 motor, go with the 243 heads for compression and flow.

Right now a 243 casing is not an option. What is the difference between a LQ4 and LQ9?

LQ4 has dish pistons LQ9 has flat tops. You really need to know which one you have before you start milling heads.

Both had egr the lq4 (vin U)compression is 9.4:1 and the lq9 (vin L) is 10.0:1. If you dont know the vin code of the truck it came out of pull one of the heads or get a scope and take a look at the pistons.

Ok, well, it is looking like i might use the 317 if the compression will allow the cam to work right, the only reason i wanted to use the 241 was to get the compression higher.

241 heads will shroud the piston on a 6.0L anyway, people are making north of 400rwhp with a stock LQ9/LQ4 with a modest cam, stick with the big ole heads!

I used the 317's till I'll get the cash for some 243's. I have my old 241's for sale...
With an ASA cam, it put down 398rwhp.

If Gullo Ford is still on Gladstell, they have a Mustang Dyno.
