TR224 without longtubes?
#21
Nice, thanks for sharing. Anyone else have experience going from a single pattern cam/longtubes, and then back to a stock(ish) exhaust? It would even be nice to hear from someone who's put a 224 cam or similar, into a car with stock manifolds or shorty headers.

As you stated earlier, I would do the TR cheater cam as it is designed for stock manifolds!

God I actually feel fortunate for once lol. Don't have to worry about emissions/smog/eCheck here in Ohio (at least where my car is registered). I've even been pulled over camming out my *** with a dumped loudmouth, and the cop said nothing but "I see you've done some stuff to your car..." haha. (been stopped by him before...)

If I had the macs like you, then I wouldn't change it. My buddies car ran good with the macs also. I know the 224/224 isn't a good cam for stock exhaust..what I'd like to know is how far it will be holding me back when I go to a stock(ish) type exhaust. What sort of gains would I see if I went with a cam designed for a more restrictive exhaust like the cheatr cam, gt2-3, gt10 or gt11, custom, etc.

Yeah as far as I know, a 114 lsa vs a 112 lsa for instance, doesn't make it any friendlier to a shorty exhaust system. It's a great cam for longtubes...However, the exhaust valve isn't open long enough in proportion to the intake valve, which makes it hard for exhaust to flow through a restrictive shorty header/stock manifold setup. This makes a 224/224 cam less than ideal for a stock exhaust. My custom cams valve events favor the intake side even more than a TR224, making my situation even a little worse. I'm still not sure how much difference an exhaust biased cam would help, but an intake biased or single pattern cam definately is not ideal.

Anybody else with experience having a tr 224 or similar single pattern cam and no longtubes. I've seen a couple cars with the tr 224 and shorty headers and they dyno'd around 345 rwhp. That's 75 rwhp less than I dyno'd! Is this cam really that bad of a performer without longtubes. Is it really worth the effort for me to swap cams when I ditch the longtubes? The 224/224 seems to not work well at all without longtubes..

I ran my 224 with JBA shorties, before getting heads and longtubes, and I thought the car ran pretty strong. I had an SLP Loudmouth exhaust at the time too. FWIW.

remember each dyno reads different.
without LT's and no cats the chances of you breakin 400rwhp are slim unless you go F/I you wont break 400rwhp with manifolds/shorties and cats. i'd say for now just keep it stock until you can move away from gay *** sac so you can actually have fun with your car . . . or get a DD so you don't have to worry about much

Sorry, I only have numbers with a lid (in sig). I estimated at the time, after installing the 224 cam and some other mods, that I was probably around 360-365 hp. Last year I added the heads and ARHs and figure I'm somewhere around 400-410.
If you really wanna have some fun with your car and stay legal think about some gears, 3.73s for an A4 or 4.10s for an M6. I installed a 12-bolt with 4.11s when I just had my cam and shortie headers and it was like a new car, lots of fun. I was happy with the car like that as a street car without longtubes and heads. The only reason I installed heads was because I had them sitting in my basement, and I went with longtubes because my state changed their emissions law.
The point is that I felt my car ran pretty stout on the street without longtubes and heads. Now, since I don't race,I have more power than I know what to do with, but I'm not complaining or anything.
