Default TR224 without longtubes?

I have a custom cam similar to the TR224. I'm going to be taking off my longtubes and going back to shorties or stock 00'+ manifolds. My cam was not designed with a stockish exhaust in mind, and I'm wondering how much this will hurt me. Would it be worth going to a cheatR cam, gt2-3 or something along those lines? Will I see much gain, or would the swap not be worth it?

I seriously doubt the effort and expense of swapping cams is going to be anywhere in the ballpark of the gains of a restricted exhaust type cam over a cam as "small" as the tr224

That's kind of the way I feel also, but I thought I would at least get some opinions first. My friend is changing a gasket for me and said he would swap out the cam for next to nothing, so I figured I would at least give it some thought. I'm sure there are others who have done exactly what I'm planning on doing, but I can't find too many threads on it. I never would have used a single pattern cam for a stock exhaust, and I wonder about the benefits of a dual pattern cam giving the exhaust a little more time to flow through a more restrictive exhaust. If the difference is indeed very minimal, then I agree it would be pointless to swap out my cam. Thanks for your input. :-)

Out of curiosity why exactly are you getting rid of the longtubes and going back to stock?

Cause I live in the "green" **** state, where they conduct random mobile smog checks and pull you over to check for CARB violations(ie. Longtubes, etc.). I want to start driving my car a lot and don't want to have to always be worried about getting my car towed and impounded. :-(

You can refuse those road side checks as long as you are not overdue.
If your on norcal-lsx pewterzee has done that, still driving w/o a tune so I don't know what he is losing hp wise.
Still better to get a cheater like the 220/228 115 etc.

Ya, I probably would risk it if I didn't live right in the middle of the **** camp lol! Some of the locations where they have the mobile smog checks have literally been a mile or two from my doorstep. I've been pulled over and had my hood popped, with impound threatened also. And thats even with cats and functioning EGR crap. I do want to sell my longtubes, but still haven't found anyone near me selling a stock setup.

Hmm, I'll have to look up pewterzee and find out how much hp he lost. I think I might have caught part of that thread on norcal-lsx, and if I remember correctly he still had to go to court over refusing. If that's the case, it's more than I want to deal with. It would be very costly for me to miss a few days of work to deal with. I just want to be able to drive my car anywhere and everwhere, without being worried. I don't like the idea of removing the longtubes, but I'll make the power up elsewhere ie. hidden n20 or CARB legal procharger, etc.

You've got good flowing heads, and a cam with a very streetable power curve, so you should be fine. Regardless your going to loose some power, but you can always install a Meziere electric water pump and get about 12 hp back.
IMO, find some one who has some used shorty headers for sale.

And Yes, calif. emission laws suck!

I know of a TR224 112 lsa in a 5500 lb tahoe, with a LQ4, stock 5.3 heads w/2" valves, all stock exhaust and stock torque converter. It had no lack of low end and you couldn't even tell the thing was cammed. Tune was spot on though.
