No, it keeps oil from pooling in the tray and permits it to drain back to the pan. I use a 1/2'', and then deburr it with a dremel. Use a press if available, and make sure you drill the side facing toward the cylinders, and not toward the valley.

and once the trays get full they overflow. The advantage to having the hole in them in minimal. But go ahead, reinvent the wheel.

Ok but here is this theory for that. How much volume does each tray hold and times that by 8 that is alot of oil that is not getting back down to the pan.

Does it really matter which side you drill? I have not been into an ls motor this far so this is a first for me.

The oil volume held by the trays does not make any huge difference. Your oil pump is only going to pump out a specific amount of oil to the engine no matter what, not to cause starvation. No more or less.

Don't you check the oil with the engine off and after allowing enough time to allow the oil to drain back into the pan? Then wouldn't the oil left in the trays be accounted for and not be affecting the level?

The side nearest the cylinders is lower than the valley side, so you'd be draining the trays to a lower level.

BTW, the only reason I'd consider this mod is to keep the trapped "tray" oil from getting old, stale and nasty...

The trays aren't indexed so you can orient them to either side. Does it help? Maybe not, but I like the idea of not having to remove the heads to get the stagnant oil trapped in the trays out.

i drilled mine.
in theory, while only a minute amount, its designed to keep weight off the valvetrain.
street miles and 100 passes on this 408. still kicking.
its one of those things you can do just cause.

the oil that accumulates in the tray. the hole allows the oil mass to drain off the head of the lifter.
there was a thread about it a few years ago.
it may be snake oil.
