Default Prc 5.3 2.5 or PRC LS6 Stage III

Im looking at getting heads for my 346. The engine is basically stock except for Longtubes and Hooker exhaust. I have a T56 with 4.10's in the rear. I really like the 5.3's as they seem to be the best head for a stock displacment LS1. The LS6 stg III heads are intriguing due to their potential. I dont plan on building a bigger engine but who does; not at least until a rod comes to see the light of day. I would like to run a cam no bigger than a MS3 or 4, looking at Torquer 2s also. I really appreciate all of the help that the guys at Texas Speed give us and I want to built with all of their parts.

The car isnt daily driven but when I do drive it I want to be able to drive it like a daily driver(with understanding to a performance engine characticts).

The Ls6 heads might be little too big and that isnt really my style. I like tight engines that perform as they should and run smooth all the time. Im not looking for a huge dyno number as I could really care less about that and I know that unless I meet another modded LS1 or........? I will be able to pull him.

What are your opnions on this topic....Texas Speed guys feel free to comment.

I understand Engine performance to a high level but Im alittle rusty and new to this engine so I would appreciate any and all conversation.

Thanks

Search is a great tool but not much out there concerning 5.3 stg 2.5 vs LS6 Stg III.

Well unless you are planning to flycut the MS4 will only clear a stock sized valve head like a ls6 stage I....

And the Stg III's are for 4"+ bore engines. I'd personally pick the LS6 stg 2's milled, thinner gasket, and a cam that will fit and give you want you want (There are a ton of different specs that could work).

Thanks guys.....Iv been lurking and reading quite some time now. Im really thinking a 5.3 head and torquer cam. I think that will make a very fun sunny day car. I think I have ruled out the LS6 Stg III but not the LS6 Stg I or II.

Tons of options.....in the long run any are better than what I have.

Keep the opnions coming...

I currently have the Torquer v2 in my '98, and I just ordered the PRC Stage 1 LS6 heads from TSP yesterday, having them milled down to 62cc's. That's what Matt recommended (or not any lower at least), and that's what I was looking for. Should put me at 11:1 compression. Looking to put it into the low to mid 400's after the dyno tune.

There are other companies out there other than TSP who port OEM heads too Do plenty of research and don't rush into it so you are not second guessing youself later

I like the ls6 heads. I'm doing the ls6 stage 2.5 heads with the 228r cam. I looked at the torquer as well but from the numbers I've been seeing they are very close on the dyno and the 228r is a little less hard on the valvetrain

i have the 2.5 5.3's and torquer III and it performs as good as you can ask. Plenty of torque across the entire RPM band, which is really what you are looking for in a "fun to drive" car. Keep in mind most of it is in the tune though, as far as driveability goes. so whichever setup you go with, find a good tuner and he can probably make anything driveable.

i have TSP 5.3 stg 2.5 heads and torquer 2 cam along with the rest of the mods in sig, fun as hell to drive quick as **** it smoked our 12.5 @ 109 cutlass with the slicks on, on the back road and i was spinning them, wouldnt try running anybody from a 30 mph roll though it just blows them off and gets sideways with regular street shoes

Dont have any #s yet cause its in a vert (need a 6pt) and a i need something better than the 7.5 with slicks and a M6, im also running a mail order tune from them pretty good, but of course no way to get it perfect thru mail order but its close, need to get it on a dyno and tuned i can smell its rich, but that means im safe

yeah i was wanting to know about the exact same comparison. i am really torn between the two sets of heads. i also want a torquer v2. maybe a v3 if i'm not gonna dd my car anymore. but i don't really see the point of milling ls6's if i can get the same cr out of the 5.3's.

oh hey 98 ta vert got any vids of your set up?

i have seen both heads at work...but in my opinion i would take the prc 2.5 ls6s.. i have seen better dyno numbers and better track times with ls6s, then the cars sporting the 5.3s..

The stage 3 heads are not what you'd want to run on a 346. If your looking for a max effort 346 head checkout the PRC 215 or PRC 227 aftermarket casting cylinder heads. These cylinder heads have the fastest h/c record at 9.66 & has proven to make big power numerous times.

If your looking for more of a budget minded setup the PRC Stage 2.5 LS6 heads would easily be the second best option behind the PRC castings. At just over $1400 the LS6 heads are pretty hard to beat for the $$$!!
