Default 243 heads worth it?

My Ls1 is out of my car right now getting reringed and i was wondering if the 243's are worth doing since i have everything apart? how much of a gain will i see from a stock set? my mods are torquer v2, lts, ported tb and a couple more odds and ends... i have found a couple sets for 500.00 and just wondering if its worth the money?

Maybe 15-20 hp , stock ( unported ) over your 241 heads (01-02). 20-25 hp over 853's (98-00).

Ok cool, i ment using the stock heads not the springs and stuff. I will be using my pushrods dual springs and retainers... Anyone know how much of a boost in power they will give me? 20-30 hp or am i hoping for too much?

Or would i be better off porting my ls1 heads? sorry i am just trying to get as many ponies out of my car on a tight budget lol... the only prob with the ls1 heads is a cross threaded header bolt from the last owner so that will need to be fixed... helicoil?

Yes, it's worth it. Have a good 5 angle valve job done to them and run them.

I have had both CNC, ported and polished 241s and 243s. Right now I am running the 243s and I am very happy. Save your money do not spend it on 241s if you can help it. AI and TEA have great packages for people building on a budget.

Good luck.

I cant afford the cnc ported heads, i mean i can either do a 500.00 port job on 241's or go with some stock 243's for 500.00... unless you guys can think of a better way to go besides my 2 options, sorry this is my first build lol

Get some 799s, they were worth over 25 rwhp, and they dont cost 500. Although 500 is not bad for 243s. Didn't lose any low end, steady increase across the board. Look up my dyno graph in the dyno section. Also with a slipping clutch, so a few more may be in there. 391 to 417. Maybe 30 rwhp without the fudged stock clutch.

799s/243s=853s/241s Mine were off a truck w/40K miles and untouched. Just bolted them on.

No variances either. Same dyno, same ambient temp, time difference of a week.

DEFINITELY worth it

so the question is: cnc 241 or cast 243

I would find some 243 or 799 at a good price, NOT $500!

People tend to ASSuME that the 243s were much more valuable vs the 799s that come off some dumb slow truck

I paid $150(I think) + my stock jacked up heads for 799s. Different cast is the only difference, as well as lightweight valves IF they came off of a Z06, and that is the only way I would pay $500 for a set of 243s
