Default G5X3 Piston - Valve Clearance?

Lou, Louis, or other - what LS6 head combos are safe to run with this cam without cutting pistons? A friend is looking into buying the cam and is considering Patriot or TEA LS6 heads with bigger valves. What vlave sizes and how much milling are safe?

Thanks!

If you get the G5X-3 on a 114 LSA, it will fit with the patriot or TEA heads with 2.02 valves as long as they are NOT milled any. Your clearence will be about .205 thousandths. LG reccomends .220", but you can get by with .205". If you order the cam on a 112, flycutting is neccisary in every application unless you are using stock heads.

LG commented on this a week ago when i asked....and as far as stock heads go..no problem...but with a fair amount of milling on any other heads...you have to cut pistons

So with my stock LS6 heads i DEFINITELY would not have to flycut the pistons with the g5x3 for sure on either a 112 or 114, lsa, correct?

FYI - I talked to Lou (I'm pretty sure it was him at LGM) about my setup when they were running the last special. I have MTI stage II w/ 2.055 valves and the heads are not milled. I was told fly cutting was necessary w/ the bigger valves.

I didn't discuss the 112 vs. 114 though.

With 2.05's you will need to cut either way. I went through that all ready.

Yeah, that is more like a Stage 3 valve. But 2.02's should work OK without milling? Does that include a .002 or .003 clean up on the heads?

The G5X-3 will fit with stock heads on a 114 LSA, but for a 112 would require them to be flycut. For this reason we recommend the G5X-3/114 for cam only installs. We figure if the heads are coming off you should go ahead and do a little head work too.

I've got the X3 on a 112 with Patriot Stage II LS6 heads. I did NOT flycut at all. I had .210 clearance on an untorqued head. So with torquing the heads I should have been around .200

Just as a reference, I had heads that were milled .020 with 2.02 intake and 1.57 exhaust valves and Diamond pistons with -2 cc valve reliefs. With the G5X3 on a 112 lsa I had .160 on the exhaust side and around .230-.240 on the intake side. Keep in mind the intake valve relief is deaper than the exhaust. Without the valve reliefs, there would have no way I would be abler to run this cam.

Would I need to cut the pistons on a G5X2 on a 112 in a stock 02 LS1?

No, it will be fine in a stock car.
