Default ?New Cam Question?

I just purchased a HR 269 220/220 .581/.581 LSA 114 for my close to stock rebuild. I was hoping that this cam will be fine without much tuning.

I do have HP tuners but I am still learning on how to use it and what all it can do.

it is a 02 Camaro, with 93,000 miles.

My heads are completed stock with OE springs, OE rockers, new Comp Cam push rods (7.400), new Comp Cam OE hyd lifters (with new cam install).

Of course I will be using new head bolts, gaskets, seals, etc.

I was hoping this set up will last me (reliable & fun) until I can finish my ?LSX? build in the future.

Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks in advanced

its gonna require some tuning for sure, but the main thing you need to do first,is get rid of the stock valve springs and at least get some comp 918's.

the stock computer should learn itself to make up for the new cam.. but it will need a better tune for it to get its full potential. I do agree with Brandon though and invest in some better spring.. Valves floating is not worth it.

You NEED springs or you will have problems down the road.... Even LS6 springs can't handle that lift. 918's or PAC 1215's would be PERFECT.

I will be using that 220/220 .581/.581 LSA 114 cam
new comp cam hyd lifters
new comp cam pushrods 7.400 (which I hope are the correct length)
Patriot Performance Gold spring kit: P/N 8401
Stock rockers

use the stock 7.4 push rods to test measure before you buy new push rods.should be a sticky on push rod measuring and lifter preload.

Scoggin Dickey sells the PAC 1218 beehive springs really cheap, I think $100 or so. You can reuse your stock retainers. No need at all for a heavy dual spring setup that has excessive closed and open pressures for your cam.

Base Circle is probably stock sized on that cam. If you have a lot of valvetrain noise you could try a 7.350 to calm it. Should be fine though.

Thank you everyone for the info.

Nitroused, I was going to get the PAC 1218 springs but I do plan on getting a bigger cam down the road, with other upgrades as well. I thought if I get the Patriot springs now, I will never have to worry about them with cam swaps later.

I would use the stock push rods but the car already had a big cam in it (I think so) when I bought it. I dont know how straight the rods are and the springs.

You can't use .650 springs with a .581 cam?

When you do get a bigger cam depending on timeline. It may be time to change springs anyway.

yeah, there is no reason why you couldn't. might be more pressure than what you really need though.

The springs are up to you... If you go with the .650 springs to plan for down the road it would depend on how far down the road you mean. They should be changed every so often anyways so if its way down the road you might have to replace them again anyways... that is a MIGHT though.

the beehive springs would definitely be the way to go thats what I put on my stock heads for my cam swap. 525/532 .525/.532 comp extreme cam.
