Default Head/Cam Suggestions for Stock 98 LS1?

Hey everyone! By the end of the summer i will have 3000 dollars to spend, and i would like to do a head and cam swap on my 98 Z28 M6. It has 138k miles and no engine mods besides a lid. I really would like a heads and cam combo that would yield between 400 and 450 rwhp. Do anyone have an idea on what i should get? I know absolutely nothing about it, so feel free to spill all the info and suggestions you can haha. The car will be used for DD and autocross.

My suggestion with that many miles is to go middle of the road on the setup. Don't look at going to big on the cam. I would call Texas Speed and talk with Jon. He has always helped me out with my technical questions.

Look at Texas Speeds 233/239 cam on a 112. This should work really well in a M6 car. In addition the PRC heads are a great product for the money. You should be somewhere very close to the 400RWHP number with this combo. Don't get sold on the idea that you need to go huge on a cam to make good power.

I don't think you will see a 450RWHP number unless you spend more than your budget. In addition, do you have the suspension setup to support that kind of power. All the power in the world is only as good as what you can put to the ground.

Oh yea, one more thought. You can always look to a good used cam and push rod setup to keep within the budget you set. Look at the cam in my signature, I am pulling it in about two weeks and will be selling it along with the push rods. Great power out of this cam.

Good Luck.

Way too many varibles to tell you what to get. Call one of the Sponsers------>Thunder Racing, Texas Speed etc. They are all good well known companys that can point you in the right direction for what your goals are with the car.

Texas Speeds Combo of 5.3L stage 2.5's with the torquer cam should put you at some nice power levels. With the rest of the money, buy urself some Long tube headers

Well you're going to want to take care of some other stuff while you're all apart so that will need to come out of the budget too. Specifically I'm talking about an LS6 intake and some headers. There's no sense in increasing the breathing capabilities of the engine if it lacks the supply or a way to expel it. So if you're looking to stay on your budget then I'll outline what your minimum supporting mods should be in addition to the heads and cam.

Pacesetter headers -$300
TSP off-road Y-pipe -$150
at minimum a different muffler like a Hooker or Flowmaster -$100
or a cat-back instead -$300
head/cam package (PRC Stg. 2.5 5.3 heads) -$1700
LS2 timing chain -$50
gaskets -$100
LS6 intake -$300

Those numbers are fairly conservative prices for lower end stuff and if you wanted to go cheaper you could see what you could pick up used. Also, there are other things like injectors, a ported oil pump, and nicer lifters that would be good considerations while you're in there but aren't absolutely necessary if you're trying to strictly adhere to your budget.

You will need to do the labor yourself to do supporting mods + H/C on your budget. Factor in $500 for a tune too. Keep in mind there are 400rwhp stock heads + cam + bolt on cars out there too....
