"Cam Only" recommendations for use with "806" heads.
Hello Everyone,
I am wanting some "Cam Only" recommendations for use with "806" 69cc heads.
The car is driven roughly 3,000 - 5,000 miles a year, and is used mostly for Drag Strip/Stop Light Showdowns.
I am NOT at all concerned with being a "Dyno Queen", but rather I just want it to run like a raped ape at the track. With that said, I am NOT interested in cam set ups that give the highest "peak" power, but rather something with a large power band that will net me the LOWEST ET.
Some suggestions already made to me are: MS4/Trex or the "Reverse Split" 230/224 type cams.
Here is what I have to work with.
- 1978 Chevrolet Caprice 2-Door Coupe (named Christine)
- Stock 1998 LS1 from a rear-ended T/A (The tune has been changed to raise rpm redline to 6500 rpm, and emissions deleted.)
- TH350 with 3500-3800 Stall
- 3:73 w/ limited slip
- Headmen Headers to true duals with "H" pipe dumping through Flowmasters at the rear axle (also have dual QTP E-Cutouts that work when they want)
- 28" MT Drag Radials
- Quickest ET so far is a 12.7 @ 104 mph with a 1.7 60'
On a side note: I may also be considering changing from the TH350 to something like a 700R4 or maybe a "Gear Vendors" Overdrove unit depending on suggestions and feedback on here.
Thank you in advance for your time!

Launching!
With an LS6 intake (your LS1 manifold doesnt breath near as well) and a mid size cam I think you'll be able to touch 11s easy. I'd contact Texas Speed or Thunder Racing and let their gurus head you in the right way.

Thank you all for your advice, keep it coming !
Anyone on here have a "ET proven" Cam only (with "806" heads) combo I can look over and study?
Btw, the car is around 3800 with me in it (200lbs) and full fluids.

I ran the TR230 with my 806 heads in my 98 Z with all the supporting mods and for a Cam only car, it was pretty nasty! And the TR230 is got a pretty nasty idle to boot. That cam makes great low end torque and from what I was told by Thunder Racing is that it was designed for a "stock headed car" somethin you might wanna look into....

I don't have it sorted out yet, just recently got a stall and now I'm not hooking. Also still running a mail order tune. Went to get a tune but the driveshaft snapped so that ended that for now...trying to get it back together.
Best so far is a 7.92@87mph 1/8th mile spinning hard to a 1.8 60ft
I'm expecting mid-low 7s with traction and a tune

i'm no expert but i would think a peaky cam like the t-rex would be less than ideal. most guys with a t-rex or similar grind have a lot of gear and a very light raceweight to run a number. i'd be looking for a broad torque band. why not get Pat G or Predator Z to spec something around your setup? atleast you would have a cam that meets your criteria
