cam surge is a bucking and kicking throughout the car bc the motor can't carry a low rpm load. Often with stock cams this hardly ever happens, as your cam gets bigger and low end torque suffers, cam surge happens over a wider rpm range. Typically I have seen it during like a 2nd gear rolling through a parking lot slow and the rpms are really low like maybe 1000.

I'm about to look up MS4 cam surging cause the car I just bought, in my sig, surges horribly when I'm cruising around 40-50mph on a street around 1.3k rpm.
I just have to give it a little gas to stop or hold down the brakes otherwise it will keep surging. Its not a daily driver so I don't mind, but if it were I'd prefer a lower lift cam, what these guys are suggesting sound good. I'd get a custom ground 224 or 226 with a low lsa cause I love the rough idle/lope.

226/229
Since everyone is helping the new guys on this thread, I'm in need of some info myself. I have a 99 Z/28 A4 that I just bought a cam for. It is a 226/229 .575 .578 on a 112 LSA. I have dual springs and retainers, rods, and a new timing chain all ready to install. My ONLY hold up is my concern about the stock TC. I don't want to spend the money to stall it right now and I def dont want to install the stuff and not be able to drive it through town. Any insight from the tech gallery? My local LSX shop swears it will all work great and I believe them, but there is just a hint of doubt.

i would do the stall before i put the cam in. with that cam on stock converter itll probably be dog slow until u hit the power band of the cam
yeah it still amazes me. but the box has been ordered!!! you going to the track this weekend? im going on the 11th n all the other guys will be there too from our last meet

Great post because I'm going down this same route soon. I will be bolt ons with stock gears and I'll be putting a cam in. My biggest thing is understanding what you want and what your expectations are. Understand that people will say bigger cams will get you more. Better heads will get you more. there are a million other things that will get you more. I'm going light on duration with a little more lift then some very mild cams and will be happy with whatever I get (hp). I want it to be smooth and unnoticeable.

it sounds to me like You're surge at 40-50 mph is simply a locked tq convertor . that is very common at that speed . either just keep it ion 3rd or You might be able to get the ecm lock up parameters changed to a little higher rpm's . the cam surge is also a concern .

Friend of mine ran a 228/228 cam with his stock 3.42s for a while. His car drove and performed nicely. Once I installed 4.10s and a few other items for him though, it was even better!
For what your wanting to do, a 224 to 228 cam will work good for you.
You have an 02, which has the better oil pump than earlier years. If you have relatively low miles, I wouldn't change the pump out, or the timing set, especially for how you use the car.

Almost any cam can be daily driven with the right tune..
But if you want to be on the safe side i would go with a 228r cam with 342s..If i were u i would look into 390s and a tq 2 size cam..Goodluck...
