Default AFR 215 Bullet UPDATE!!

Well it has been awhile since the engine dyno day at Westech of my new Tony Mamo built stroked LS2 with the brand new AFR 215 LS heads. I figure you all were due an update.

Reference this thread for those who didnt follow the detailed build…..

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...r-215-r-d.html

The engine has been reinstalled in my 2002 EB Z06. Shortly after installation and during normal break-in and “test driving”, the pilot bearing decided to fail. OF COURSE!! A $12 part to ruin my week LOL!!. That took some time to get replaced. Then bad weather prevented making any real head way with tuning along with Mike Norris being busy with other scheduled customer projects. Why he didn’t think that I was the only person on earth that needed my car worked on is beyond me LOL!!

Anyway, I have some preliminary dyno results we got a month ago from Mike’s stingy dyno (I think his dyno’s nickname was/is “The Humbler” when it was in Florida LOL!). I have been waiting to see if we could tweak a few more with the final tune but with mine (and Mike's) hectic schedule that may be a few more weeks, so I thought I would share what I have now. And for those who will point to the fact it's in STD (versus SAE), know that Mike normally tests with that correction factor to get his numbers closer to the typical SAE results on other dyno's. In fact when I told Tony I was going to have Mike do the tune after he moved from Florida to Indy, I heard crickets on the phone, and he mentioned he liked Mike but knew how stingy his dyno was known to be. The plan is for Mike to spend more time with some street tuning/drivability and WOT stuff to finalize everything (Mike is on vacation this week) and when we do will look for the last bit of TQ and HP we didn't have time to find in the first go round which was more about getting the car up and running to allow me to put some miles on the chassis to make sure everything is AOK. Once Mike is back in town, 41that the final tuning will be taken care of.

I am also planning on strapping the car to another local dyno soon, just as a comparison (it’s always good to have several sample sets of data). Also, I hope to get to the track in a couple of months for some big MPH numbers to back up the dyno results (there are no dyno tricks going on with this pony and I plan on proving that for everyone – I have nothing to hide).

A note about how this car drives: IT IS INSANE!!! The low end, low RPM throttle response is instant. The torque down low is asphalt peeling. On street tires (Nitto INVO 305/30’s) 1st gear is useless. 2nd gear is useless. The car will blow the rear tires off in 3rd gear if I stab the gas at anything above 2500rpm. I literally can not get full tire grab until 4th gear. It really is a tad bit ridiculous for a car that will never see the track LOL!! I actually LOVE IT. It is EXACTLY what I wanted out of the build. I wanted more low rpm torque than the tires could handle and I got that and more. She still idles all day long at 950RPM, cruises at 1100RPM in 6th gear without issue. The car makes enough torque I can accelerate in 6th gear form 1500RPM and it actually sets you back in the seat a tad bit.

The RPS Street Twin Lite Tony helped me with has taken some getting used to, but it is working flawlessly. Simply a GREAT clutch! I can feather it in a parking lot or take off from a stop without touching the gas. And since it is very light, it allows the motor to rev like a freaking banshee on crack! Anyone on the fence about a clutch, I would HIGHLY recommend the RPS unit.

The GHL Bullet exhaust is a dream. I came from B&B Bullets (which I loved – but too much damn drone). The GHL’s allow me to cruise around without getting a headache now. And I can actually hear the stereo! Still has a nice aggressive pop at idle, and makes women mess their mascara up when I go to full throttle.

The Pfadt coilovers are simply the best mod for the money, period. Ride quality is far and above the previous lowered on stock bolts w/ Bilstein shocks setup. The car is FUN to drive! And I mean FUN! A firm but not tooth rattling ride. Car tells you what is doing. I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!!

Once again MAJOR kudos to Tony Mamo for all of his advice, direction, and of course building me one of the baddest street driven LS2’s on the planet.

Graph below along with a “teaser” vid of the car idling.

Stay tuned for some vids showing drivability, and of course maybe some “spirited” reference material

****, with 540hp at the tires and 500 ft lbs I don't know why someone would say that, all though I am sure they will. It sounds like it has great street manners too. Looks like about 13% drivetrain loss from the engine dyno.

On slicks that thing should be DEEP into the 10's.

I recently helped a customer that had a 427 with our 225 heads, good compression (11.6 or so), ported FAST, 244/248 cam.....everything you would need to lay down a big number on 93 octane. Put up a whopping 520/480 something on Mike's dyno prior to him moving up north. And that engine was 20 cubic inches larger than Steve's with the same STD correction factor btw.

Im pretty confident Steve's car will roll a little higher even on Mike's dyno after he's done with all the little details and certainly higher on most other dyno's if they report numbers closer to the median average. Not that any excuses need to be made....Steve's numbers fall right in line with where I was hoping they would be (based on Westech's numbers) and honestly I was afraid of even worse numbers on Mike's dyno!!

Steve's butt meter has the new combo registering real high and that's the most important measuring device of all! I look forward to some in car vids perhaps to get a better feel for the explosive power curve....Every time I hang up with Steve since the engine was quickly tuned I find myself wanting to get on a plane to check it out for myself....LOL

Thanks all. Car is ABSOLUTELY fun!!

Here is some interesting comparo data. When I bought this car, it came with a "built" (built by a forum vendor that will remain unnamed) 402 with ETP LS7 style heads (big dollar heads), LS7 intake and a 244/252 .602/.612 114LSA cam. It "supposedly" made 540 RWHP. Well it didnt. Below is the original dyno sheet from DTE shortly after I bought the car. Below that graph is my current graph with DTE's dyno results "overlayed" onto it (DTE did NOT build the car, they simply retuned it for me after I bought it). The power difference (area under the curve) is simpy amazing. And you sure can feel it on the street. The previous motor had zero throttle reponse below 4500 rpm. I had trouble spinning the rear tires in 2nd gear with the old motor. I can easily blow the rear tires off the car in 3rd gear with the new motor. I LOVE IT!! The new powerplant combo is MUCH more fun! Just goes to show that bigger is not always better.

Very nice results. The original thread on your build was one of the things that convinced me to send my 205's out to Tony. I should have my results in a few weeks. Only on a stock bottom LS1 A4 but I expect some impressive numbers from Tony's work. Nice to see what some more cubes can bring.

Great combo. Love the solid area under the curve. Bet it's a blast to drive!

Steve,

Congrats again on getting your beast out on the road and finally being able to enjoy the heartbeat Mamo built for you.....

With all that low-end grunt are you considering trying a drag radial?? It would be interesting to hear your comments on how the car feels if it was actually hooking up!!! A little bit more anyway - lol

Thanks friend! The car is an absolute rush to drive.

Re: drag radials - probably wont happen for two reasons.

#1 being an ex-road racer/autocrosser, I dont like the squirmy, no feedback, non-confidence inspiring feeling drag radials provide when cornering. I am more of a spirited driver than a straight line knuckle dragger LOL! I like to take the on/off ramps kinda quickly (irritates my wife, but what the hell )
#2 I dont think anyone makes a 19" drag radial. I know Toyo makes the R888, but not sure if that is considered a "drag radial".

The smile gets bigger the more I drive the car!
