Default The Stupid Question

I know this is a stupid question. But I am a college kid and MPG does matter. $$$ How do I get an aggressive high horse ls1 without killing my gas mileage. Does displacement make it a lot worse? Can a more aggressive cam be less destructive than a high displacement? I was hoping to stroke the engine and I don't like the idea of turbo since I want this to be a track car. Turbo lag could be a big problem.

Many guys use turbos on the track and run 10s and still get 20+mpg. My advise, wait til you can afford gas and stay off the skinny peddle. To make more power you have to burn more gas. No matter what you do you will lose mpg with more power.

turbo lag allows cars with a lot of hp to hook up.build the biggest motor you can afford, and put a good cam it.

Increase the efficiency, and I don't mean volumetric, that will obviously flow more air, and more air needs more fuel and more fuel means "more destructive fuel mileage."

Reduce drivetrain losses or friction. Also, a well programmed tune can help with this as you can better fine tune the AFR for the particular setup.

Turbo would be good if you can keep your foot out of it. Nitrous would be good too, only burns that extra fuel when you activate the system.

When my car was stock it got 29 MPG on the highway...after heads/cam and all the bolt ons it makes 452/418 and still gets 27 MPG on the highway and 19 around town..of course all that goes down the drain if you are running it hard and having fun...

Weight reduction will help you with better track times. It won't get you any high HP numbers but who cares. Nitrous is also a good option.

....Wait, how can you afford to mod your car if you can't afford to pay for gas?

I'm building a porsche 944 from the ground up and aiming for under 6 grand. Its been working out really well so far. But its 300 miles one way to my college and I make the 600 mile round trip about 6 times a year. So, that part could get really expensive over 4 years.

I understand they meant a custom cam but what about the cam should I look for? As far as duration, lobe size, etc...

gut the weight. You don't really need a/c or rear seats anyways. Then do some easy bolt ons and get a good cruising tune. You'll have enough to feel good when you pull up next to most stock cars on campus without completely sacrificing your mpg.

Is it worth going for fiberglass parts? I mean the hood knocks out 50 lbs. Do you think fiberglass doors and body panels? What about lexan or lightweight windows. I'm in an old porsche and most the stock parts are pretty dang heavy. I have to replace most of it anyway since I don't even have a front window. Might as well go light right?
