Default I found the problem the misfire!

I pulled the drivers side valve covers and I found THIS!....

These are Trickflows "Upgraded Spring" good for a .670 lift and Im only running a VRX5 cam (236/238 .601/.605 113 LSA) that I bought as a package in February of 2009 from Vengeance. In March of 2009 StraightLine installed it and I ran with it all last summer (only on the nice weekends) and for a few times this year. All in all I have about 5-6k miles! My supporting mods are in my SIG. I guess Im a little disappointed but......
How does this happen?
Will Trickflow honor it and send me new springs?
Should I pull the heads?
What are the chances of me having other weak springs?

Sorry for the questions, I would appreciate any help here thanks!

I'd give Ron a call first thing....he's a stand-up guy and he'll point you in the right direction whether it's sending you replacements from his stock or getting with TFS about them and straightening it out.

Well I got off the phone with Mike at TEA and he is going to send me a spring and would like the broke spring back to analyze it because broken trickflow springs are a rarity and is going to try and see what went wrong. So a new set would not be necessary and I should be fine.
Ron also called to make sure I was squared away.

Hopefully I should be back on the road by next week.

I would check ALL the springs for proper installed height, coil bind. Nothing will take out springs faster than poor installation.

They were assembled and shipped from TEA so I doubt that was the problem.

Wow he is a very standup guy, how does he know that you did not mis-shift it and spin it out way too high causing this. Just saying.

Thats cool you figured out the problem hopefully all goes well.

Yes you can check them with the heads on, one at a time or two if you have the right spring tool.

It would be stupid not to check the others. I doubt it broke for no reason.

Just b/c you bought the heads "assembled" from whoever, doesnt necessarily mean the guy there knew what he was doing.

Whenever buying heads assembled, they should ALWAYS be taken apart and checked by someone who knows what they are doing to make sure the springs were setup CORRECTLY before installed...IMO.

Good luck

awe come on rob you know why his spring broke it wasn't from your car ...

and I didn't know you were still alive thought you might have moved to Mexico or something...you get a new phone number or girlfrend

zeke I would still compression that cyclinder...you might have bent a valve...how much pressure do you think that inner spring is helping close that valve...might have smacked the piston...if it were me I would at least check the compression or do a leak down...

Chris I did have the air to hold up the valve and it was holding! I am gonna get a test done after the spring goes IN!!

Well I couldnt take the damn spring OFF!!!!

I dont know what happened but if you can see in the picture the top of the second spring seat is flush with the tip of the valve and the valve seat is not concave anymore it looks more flat as oppose to the first valve where the tip of the valve sticks out just a little and the seat is more concave. Some how the retainers wont let go! Like if the are seized to the seat. I think that when the Rocker was hitting the valve it was slamming the top since it didnt have and spring pressure keeping it close to rocker. YOU can see what im talking about on the second picture where the rocker on the left looks like it is on the tip of the valve and on the right the tip of the valve is lower than the left! What do you guys think? How can I remove the springs safely?

PS Thanks for your help Paul!

put air pressure to it and take a spark plug socket and put it over the retainer and rap it with a hammer.

Well boyz, I installed the spring back and I still had problems. When I changed the spring I had the PSI at only 50 or so and I didnt think hear any air coming from the intake or the tailpipe so I assumed I didnt have a bent valve. I started it and went for a cruise and it still had a missing problem! So I took my time and I pulled the damn head OFF!!

here is what the spring caused! I guess Im still lucky and it could of been worse! If I send the head back to TEA do you guys think they'll replace the valve for me? This sucks man!

A decent machine shop will be able to install a replacement valve, just be sure to get the same part. Check w/ TEA and they might make a deal on sending you a replacement.
