Default Pushrods with cam?

I am about to have a cam installed, and i have heard mixed results on whether or not pushrods are needed? a couple of my friends told me that "its better to bend a pushrod then bend a valve, so keep the stock rods." is this true? im not sure if its ok to leave stock pushrods in when doing a cam install, or if you are supposed to change them out. i do have a set of Manley 7.4 pushrods if needed.
cam specs: TSP 231/237 .598 .595 112+2

Get new friends.

Stock push rods will deflect. Get harden push rods, measure for the correct preload to get the correct pushrod length needed.

Your friends are idiots (no offense).

You need new hardened push rods.

While it is true that in an over rev where there is valve float there is a chance the stock pushrods will bend before valves crash into pistons, there is also a good chance you will just keep bending pushrods when spinning the engine to 6500+ when there was never a threat to the valves hitting anything.

I know several people who do not replace the pushrods when they do a cam. To me, this is a sign that they arent' setting up a valvetrain correctly. They are just using the pushrods as a weak point for their lack of spring pressure to save the motor during an over-rev. If you set a valvetrain up right (much better valve springs than the cam needs), you shouldn't have trouble with valve float, and you should be fine even in the event of an over-rev.

Consider larger OD as well.

Get yourself some aftermarket push rods...the stock push rods do not even do a good job on a stock engine ... Your friends have no clue as to how to set up a valve train correctly..quit listening to them and talk to real professionals who know what they are doing...there are many vendors AKA "professionals" listed on the right hand side of this page..Texas Speed, Vengeance Racing, to name a couple...call one and ask the question and you will receive the correct advice on how to set up a valve train correctly ..

Measure your preload after you do the install then you will know what length PR's to buy. You will probably be ok with stock length (7.4) but if you end up needing a little longer (7.425) let me know im selling a barely used set. They are Comp cams and they only have aroud 5,000 miles on them.

Noticed that you are from Dallas. These "friends" wouldn't happen to be the "LS1 enthusiasts" that work at a certain Nissan dealership would they?
